Mums who have renewed you taxcredits n was on maternityleave last tax year, did all of u get money back now? How long did it take to find out?

im going on maternity leave from september, i already have children and an exsisting tax credits claim. ive been told to take £100 off my weekly earnings from when my maternity starts and for how many weeks im on it. apparantly i have to take this off the figure of last years earnings. im so confused :) my friend got a nice lump sum in her back dating of tax credits from last year of being on maternity x

i got an extra £82 for last year on top of the £402 i was given, this was because our wages where £10,000 less than the year before

i just left it the same can you claim more if your wages are less due to maternity pay?

Does anyone know what your entitled too if you dont go back to work/ work alot less than before?

I left it the same too. Still counted as if I was working as I was employed. Done it twice now...

Not sure Tinkerbell, how many hours did you work before? I work 16 hours and get tax credits and help with childcare.

You have to take £100 p/month for while on matenity leave? I didn't know that, and it wasn't on the form? Do I need to ring them and tell them that seeing as my leave started in October I need to deduct £600 from my total earnings last year?

Argh it's so confusing and nobody there is helpful at all xxx

I phoned up and did mine that way which is much easier than doing the form. I lost the head with the form it confused me so much!!! The women I spoke to mentioned deducting a certain amount from your over all earnings that year but I can't remember just how much she said. I got a massive tax rebate nearly £1500 :) was so shocked that I phoned up again lol just to check they hadn't made a mistake. I got mine rebated along with the payment I get as usual for my child tax credits a few week later.

PS. The first person I spoke to was useless! Ended up hanging up on him and phoned back.
Once I spoke to someone competent it was done in a few minutes. Just have your P60 ready
Hope this helps

^^^ WOW  I'm still waiting to see if we get anything back! I hope its that much

When I did mine online estimated calculator n took of the maternity 2700 aswell I still was on 10ish a week so I don't think we get anything

Just thought I'd pop in cause I spoke to them yesterday and still don't really understand the ins and outs but basically if your husband/partner earns 42k or more (which includes car benefit etc) it doesn't matter what you earn, you'll get nothing. They work it out on household income so even though I now get nothing (mat pay ended last month and not going back to work) we are still entitled to nothing as dh just hits that threshold :(
Trying really hard to not get on my soapbox about paying tax for 15 yrs and now I could do with something back as our household income has nearly halved but considered too well off is a bit irritating, we are most definitlely not well off.

In a way tho you are compared to other family's my o/h works full time and earns 15k a year that nothing compared to your income, understand what you mean about paying tax for years, I don't work and do get child tax credits but even with that our income would still be half yours to live on for the year and that's with 3 kids.
I don't mean to talk out of place but just trying to show how I think they work it out as some families live on a lot lot less then others xxxx

Don't get me wrong, i am by no means pleading poverty i know there are many worse off than us and I wouldn't want to take from those who do really need it. I just meant in terms of lifestyle... we have a small 2 bed house (can't afford anything bigger even though we're tripping over stuff), don't have holidays unless we save the coupons out the Sun! Only buy new clothes once/twice a year (and only ever in the sales) etc.

I know there are many many people who work damn hard to support their families and don't earn much, and those are the people who absolutely deserve all the help on offer... its the families who have 50inch plasmas hanging on their walls, kids dressed up in labels every day and don't work for it, just take what our government are too stupid to offer to those work shy, that really gets my back up.

I didn't mean to offend, so hope i haven't, just this is something that really gets my goat!

Oh, and i'm a little jealous as would love another little one and dh won't let us until we 'can afford one' :(

It's totally fine I was just trying to show how I think they sometimes have to work this, I suppose every life is different and I suppose where you live depends on housing costs etc i.e London so different money go's different ways, just to me 42k I would be loaded haha hope you get my point and I wasn't being funny :) xxxx

No absolutely, I just wish that money would allow us some luxuries instead of going all on TAX!! and bills :shakehead:

Mine and dh's combined wage is approx £17000,we have 4 kids and have to scrimp and save to afford any luxuries. We live in north Lincolnshire where housing is fairly cheap so we live in a big 14 roomed house for 625 a month. If we lived anywhere else in the country I doubt we'd survive xxx

I'm in the same boat as you. My partner and I earn just above the 41k between us, but I'm the main wage earner. My wage is now halved due to Mat Leave and my partner has to spend £500 a month commuting to a job he hates but with there being very little employment around he can't move jobs closer to home. So that's £500 a month we don't have! If we took that money off his annual income our combined income would be a lot less and we'd be entitled to Tax Credits!

I know 41k is a dream household income for most, but we are also not well off! We don't dine out, eat takeaways, buy nice new things. Our fuel bill is high despite me trying to keep our usage to a minimum, and its set to rise by 18% this month.

I'm dreading trying to afford childcare :(

Completely agree with you mrsb... Sounds like a dream income but doesn't translate into reality :(

I just can't get my head around how you live on that... Our mortgage on our 2 bed house is about the same as what you pay so housing is more expensive but we only have 1 child to feed and clothe and have to save for luxuries.
