Just wondering how long you need to wait after birth before you can have a tattoo.?

I'd like to know this too as I want to get something for little man after he's born! I think inky would prob be the best person to ask x x

thanks ive tryed googling it but cant seem to find out. Yeah me too im wanting his name on my wrist

I've wrote to inky saying there's a post here! I want little man's name on my foot as I have laceys on my back! I've already got a tattoo on my wrist! I don't like mine but love looking at other peoples there!!

I don't think you will have to wait
At all! Maybe give it the 6 weeks your hv says before you do to much and get it done then!
I had k's done on my wrist about month
And half after I had her!

I will warn about foot I haven't felt pain like that before!!!
It's ok once it's
Done then once it starts healing the presure of the blood rushing hurts It was ok about a week after and my foot swelled up. I'll pop a pic on of my foot just so you can see the worse bit that hurt was the bit by the toes something about nerves?!?

I dont think you need to wait, unless you are breastfeeding, in that case, you need to wait until you've stopped.
If you have any swelling I'd wait til that goes down.

Oh no smess don't say that, it's the last one I'm having and the only place that's left to get tattooed! I don't like too many tattoos around one area!! Might have to add his name to laceys tattoo on my back but I found that the most painful tattoo! :( your tattoos gorgeous though :D

thanks chaz

i already have a butterfly on my wrist so i thought keyan's name round the outside of it would be nice. I was planning on getting a tattoo on my foot aswell been told its sore but not sorer than any other tattoo your tattoo is stunning though smess x

im having Noas name on my wrist but have to wait as im gonna breastfeed.. :(

oooops!! Can you tell I don't check my user cp? Sorry Lacey's Mummy, I only just saw your message and this thread - blame the baby brain :)

As far as I know it's OK to be tattooed whilst breast feeding, the only real danger is if you don't look after it properly whilst it heals then any infection could theoretically be passed to the baby - the ink etc is no danger whatsoever. The only other thing to bear in mind is that a tattoo is an open wound, and if your body is still getting over giving birth then it could take a little while longer to heal.

I think as long as you're ready healthwise and aren't too busy looking after a new baby to take care of your new tat properly then I wouldn't worry!

Sorry again for being so slack....

While I kinda agree with Inky.. I also kind don't :D Sorry!

Although in theory there should be no danger in getting tattooed while breasfeeding.. there are dangers so please be careful.
Make sure you know enough about the tattooing process to know that the studio you're going to is safe. There is NO standard regulation in the tattoo industry and ANYONE can get a kit off ebay and open a shop. Yes, you have to register with your local council, and yes the Environmental Helath dude may show up. Will he be able to see on one visit if the autoclave is being used correctly every time? No. Does he know enough about the tattoo industy to be able to spot the signs of bad practice in a shop that looks spotless? Probably not.
Make sure the artist is more than competent. Ask for photos of their work, not just artwork on the walls. Go by personal recommendation.. ask people you now that have lots of tattoo coverage where they go. ANYONE can say they are a tattooist.. there are no exams to pass, courses to go on.. ANYONE can do it. Not a good thing.
Tattoo inks are generally safe.. although it is more common than you might think for people to have a bad reaction to certain inks.. particularly reds. There's also not specific regulation regarding the formulation of tattoo inks (at least there def wasn't a year ago.. can't see that much has changed since then that we wouldn't know about.) Yes the ingredients have to be passed as safe to humans.. but not specifically for insertion under the skin.

Now to be fair these points apply to EVRYONE getting a tattoo.. not just those with new babies. But please bear in mind that firstly your body is still healing after the trauma of chidbirth.. do you really want to add to it's stress? And secondly, if you're breasfeeding, then anything that you do to yourself has a chance (no matter how slight) of affecting your baby. Even if it's a small as maybe your body putting extra effort into healing the tattoo and a little less effort into the quality of your milk?

I'd stay away from getting a tattoo while breasfeeding for sure.. and even if not breastfeeding. I'd still wait 6 months after giving birth.

Getting a tattoo from a competent tattooist who always puts his clients wellbeing first is a safe procedure. Any decent tattooist will always tell you that the best time to get a tattoo is when you're feeling absolutely 100% fit and well. It'll minimise the trauma your body suffers and speed up healing time. My opinion is that if your body is doing anything extra, over and above normal function, (so healing after childbirth, breasfeeding, etc) then you should wait.
Maybe use the time while you wait to research the best tattooist in your area? Design your own tattoo? Find out a bit more about the tattoo industry so that your not giong into it blind? Just a though ;)

I'm not trying to scare anyone and sorry for the ENORMOUS post.. but getting a tattoo should require a lot of thought and at least a bit of knowledge.. especially now that you have a little person depending on you :D xxx

D'oh forgot to add..

Hubby has been a tattoo artist for 7 years, working in the UK and abroad. He's been working in the industry, but not tattooing, for at last 7 years before that.
He has also pretty much built a shop from scratch, taking into consideration EVERY E.U and industry-led guideline (not rules you notice.. just suggestions that you don't have to follow if you don't feel like it) relating to the ideal environment for the safe practice of tattooing.
I have first hand experience of tattoo ink manufacture and distribution, and all the legislation that goes with it, having worked very closely with one the industry's most respected ink producers.
I've also worked at least part time in the shops Hubby has tattooed in, and have good knowledge myself of sterilisation procedures and the risks involved (BBPs, ABPs, improper waste disposal, etc).

Always best to state your sources :D xxx
