Stomach muscles

Really want to start my exercise up again but when the midwife did her last visit/postnatal check she said I still had a finger-width gap between my vertical stomach muscles. That was obviously a while ago now so can I just presume they have gone back to normal?

I have been told that if I start doing sit ups etc before they have returned to the right place then I can actually make the situation worse, but kinda feel that a trip to the doctors to check it out is a bit of a waste of their time!

Anyone had any experience of their stomach muscles not going back to normal? Or any other advice?
 
hey becky, i have got the same. they actually thought mine was a hernia so went to see a surgeon and they said that its just my muscle has got sooo thin ! i was told to start some 'mummy fit' classes near me if i can find any. and to do some sit ups once im feeling a bit generally fitter myself ! x
