Am I right in thinking you don't have to sterilise bottles + other feeding equipment at 6 months? If so, what did you do just wash up the bottles and store them away till feeding time? Also, do you start using the follow on milk straight away at 6 months? She's currently on the SMA Gold first milk but she's 6 months old next week xx

I never used follow on milk so can't help there.
bowls and spoons ive always wash in hot soapy water, with bottles I sterilised until we stopped using them at 1 year as the bacteria from the milk can be dangerous xx

You only have to sterilise anything that touches milk ie bottles, teats, breast pump because milk is a breeding ground for bacteria. Everything else can just be washed in hot water.

As far as I'm aware they don't HAVE to have follow on milk, it's more of a preference thing.

I sterilise bottles etc until they're a year old, after that I just rinse them and then put them in the dishwasher. You don't have to use follow on milk, I guess it depends how well the child is feeding. I am sure it doesn't have to be exactly 6 months, that's just advisory. Wait until your supply of first milk is used up and instead of buying more, buy the follow on milk?

Thanks girls, I never really wanted to stop sterilising cuz of the milk thing so I'll just carry on with that :) I've only just bought a tin of first milk so that'll last me a while then I'll see about the follow on.

I sterilise all bottle equipment and wash feeding stuff in hot soapy water. I'm keeping LO on first milk

I think I just got a bit confused as two of my friends said they both stopped sterilising everything at 6 months, bottles and all. I'm a paranoid person to be honest esp where things like this are concerned so I'm gonna continue, I started weaning her already and I sterilise all her feeding equipment too inc her little bowl. xx

I stopped sterilising at 6 months but it's a personal preference thing I think.
You don't need to go onto follow-on milk, but retailers are allowed to put offers on milk for 6 mths+ so you often get a better deal - plus you get points/can spend points on follow on milk in Boots. The earlier milks are all price controlled by government regs so you can't.

I'm going to continue to sterilise and move to follow on milk when our carton of first run out. Only moving because it's cheaper and get my boots or sainsburys points. We use aptimal and only difference seems to be the iron content.

As said anything that you use for formula has to be sterilised. We tried moving on to follow on milk but it made her quite sicky all the time and I found it was really lumpy when mixed so have gone back to stage 1 milk and all is well again

My mum kept telling me that i didnt need to sterilise after 6 months as my lg is putting things in her mouth anyway... but im going to do it until she doesnt have milk anymore... its not worth the risk with the amount of bacteria it breeds

We put our lg on follow on milk when she turned 6 months as she is our first and we didnt really know any different, since then have heard that its just a money making scheme... our lg is happy on it and we get clubcard points in tesco so its win win :)

Do whatever you feel is best... i agree with using the rest of your number one milk up first though, no point in wasting it for the sake of a week or so after your little one turns 6 months. x
