Does anyone know anything about this & how it works? I've heard they take the stem cells from the umbilical cord & store them for 25 years. But how does this help with hereditary diseases? x

And hubby and I have requested brochures

If you google cord blood banking - there are private companies that do it with payment plans :)

One of those companies is the well known Virgin!

The brochures and google will explain better than I could but its well worth it xx

Yes recently I have also known about this they explained that instead of wasting it we store it .....like this they explained and they said that in EMI procedure the payment should be paid and it costs RS.1600 per month for 48 months. Emi will be starting after the delivery (mostly 45 days after).I am interested whether any one invested and how helpful is this.

I asked my gastroenterologist about this, she said in her opinion knowing what they know now, it isn't viable for treating conditions involving multiples types of cell. In single cell conditions & abnormalities it could be useful but it is all very early days in terms of research. She said if she was in my position she wouldn't do it. So I've taken her advice & hope I don't regret it x

I see your point

But look how far we have come in 30 years

Imagine 30 years down the line what could be done with stem cells- they are already making burgers and have managed to make a dead pigs heart tissue become human and start beating with stem cell introduction

It's something we are definatley not pushing to one side- science is an amazing tool :)

I'm not sure i could forgive myself if I had the opportunity then 30 years down the line find out that the storing of my child's stem cells could cure an otherwise in curable disease ? :)

I'm one of these what if - kind of people though

She did say in 10-15 years they may have advanced & it may prove useful but my condition requires an environmental factor to trigger it & she also said the risk of passing it onto my children is very small so weighing up the options, can I justify the money without the assurance?....l

That last question is exactly our problem- money - why does everything revolve around money eh! :)

it's a shame it's not easier to donate the stem cells too,as people can use them now for research which would advance it all a lot quicker. Few hospitals take them though. Mostly London based.
And yes, agreed, it's always down to money which is depressing!
