Tom's always been a good eater but lately he's taken to spitting out food.
He used to love broccoli but now he just spits it out.
Same with loads of other stuff.
Is this a normal stage? What's the best thing to do? I normally ignore it and praise him when he keeps a mouthful in.
Any advice would be great! Lx

I don't know - but I wish I did! I hope someone else replies!

For weeks now, DD will spit out mouthfuls of food, only to take the next spoonful happily (i.e. she's not full up and she likes it :wall: ) - I think it must be an independence thing.

yeah its normal. i just keep putting same thing n baby budges plate.
She sometimes eats it sometimes spits it out.
Yesterday we had out home grown cauliflour and she wouldn't have ANY of it. Then today i put it on her plate and she scoffed the lot. I videoed her it was that funny to see.

You just have to keep offering the same food and they either take it or leave it. depends on their mood ithink.

Trick is not to be tempted to offer crap.

Hayden went through a stage of spitting out carrot at about Toms age- i stopped giving him carrot and then re-introduced it a few months later and he was fine- but that was just one food- if he is doing it with lots of stuff then thats not a good soloution-and i'm not sure what to suggest! it might be to do with texture.. or maybe he just doesn't like it..as his tastebuds are developing his tastes will change! Hayden has decided he doesn't like salmon now, i just make him something else and i'll try him on it again in a while..see if he is still the same!

Budge, do you offer an alternative?

Take lunchtime today...I made Tom an avocado and chicken sandwich. He had about four bits and spat the rest out. I haven't given him anything else...I thought if he was hungry, he'd eat it plus I don't want to get in to a situation where I'm making four different lunches to find one he likes.

Is that right or should I be finding something else for him?

hiya lucybee,
i make one meal for the whole family and if one doesn't like it then they don't eat. Simple as that. Coz i have 4 kids i can't make loads of different meals for each individual. Plus i don't pamper to fussiness. My second child is the biggest fuss pot going when food is concerned. But when i make a sunday lunch for example i put her everything on it. I figure one day she will try a brussel for example and like it. My kids have long learnt not to complain at whats is handed to them. They can either give it to someone else at the table or go without. But thats that till the next meal. I do make meals that suit all though - like bolgnese which goes down a treat  no waste there!
I came from a family of 5 kids and i never remeber my mum fissing over my likes and dislikes and i got what i was given and that was that. Im the same with mine.
I leave them to go hungry if they don't care for whats on their plate. Even baby budge.
May sound harsh but thats the way i do it. :)

luke went through a stage of spitting food out and it drives me mad i hate wasting food :wall:

i try to be like budge and say tough cos i know its behavioural most of the time or related to teething.

but then he started waking in the night hungry!! like early hours of the morning and it drives me mad!!
its rarer now he does it i just have to play it by ear, i tend to let him feed himself and let him eat what he does and try not to stress about it.

very frustrating though!!

Both mines did this. I drove me up the wall. Not eating it was one thing but to spit it out really got my back up. As budge says, they either eat whats put down to them or not at all.

Sometimes though if I think they really havent eaten well I will try to get them to eat a weetabix before bed. Its something filling but not exciting so they dont think they have got one over on me.

Thanks all for replying.
Budge, thanks...I'm going to do that too. I can't be getting in to a situation where I'm preparing loads of alternatives.
My sister-in-law did that and now she has a three year old who will only eat avocado or macaroni cheese. Nothing else.
Good to hear how you all coped with it. It's given me the reassurance I needed.
THANK YOU LOVELY LADIES
