i walked past a nail bar today (iv never been to one- altho i ought to really my nails are mingin!) and the prices were in the window- i think i can work out for myself what "full set" means  but what on earth is "infill" and "back fill"??? :?

Full set means a full set of arylic (sp) nails and infills are every 2 weeks or so you have to go back and have infills done as your natural nail will be growing underneath the fake ones

Not sure what back fill means tho :?

Yip, a full set of acrylic or gels is basically that, all 10 nails done. Infills are for when your natural nails have grown and you get a gap between your cuticles and the start of the false acrylic/gel bit of nail, they basically fill the gap up. I have no idea what back fill means and I've been having them done for 15 odd years! Never heard of that before. I know they do over-lays (quite literally a layer over a nice natural nail to strengthen it) but not sure about back fill, never heard of it.

Oh and if your considering them, acrylic is a harder nail but it's much thicker than gel. Gel nails are (in my opinion) nicer, they are thinner and not so heavy or bulky looking. I had acrylic the first year or so I had them then switched to gel and haven't been back to acrylics since.

I googled cus iv never of backfils before either and on some other forum somewhere somehad had asked too but they got an answer so i nicked it !!!

A backfill is when a 'trench' is drilled behind the white when the white has grown out and is showing the natural smile line. This trench is then filled in with more white acrylic to 'correct' the smile line.

Infills are when the area that has grown out (near the cuticle) is filled in.

Rebalances is when the entire surface if filed down and reshaped because the correct placement of the apex (arch) needs readjusting to strengthen and 'balance' the shape of the nail.

Good to know !

they are sods to get off though :rotfl:

Tell me about it, hense I've just kept going with them all these years... :rotfl:

I am a qualifed nail technician, when acrylic nails are done, most places mould the nail in one colour, say pink and then spray or paint the White tips on. Other places also mould the White tip (smile line) first and then lay the pink over it. The latter method takes longer and is usually more expensive but worth it as the White top won't chip off. Also PLEASE don't let them file your natural nail. Some of them will do this on purpose as it weakens your nails so you keep wanting acrylics on, hence keeping them in business

EVERY salon I have ever been to for nails (acrylic in the 'olden' days and gel now-a-days) has ALWAYS filed my nails, even if it's just a rough sratch over with an emery board....I didn't know they could do it without doing that (they say it's for adhesion reasons). Where can you go to have gels done without the nail bed filing? I have been to thousands of salons over the years paying anything from £30-£55 for them and it's always been done. Actually I even went into the local college to be a client for a student doing an exam there and even she done it so it must be taught?

They filed my nails when I had them done, and after I bit them all off my nails underneath where horrible and flimsy :(
I vowed I would never have them done again :shakehead:

Poppy I said that too after a few sets of nails, my natural ones went weak, full of ridges etc that were quite deep so like Claire said they have not only ruined my nails but ruined them well enough that I keep going. I've had them off for about 6 months over my last month of pregnancy and newborn baby stage (was frightened of scratching DS) but even 6 months made no difference.....the nails are back on again :x

that is exactly why. its usually the chinese salons that do it. it is NOT for adhesion reasons, its to speed it up so they can fit mroe customers in and make more money. they shouldnt use electric files either.

Claire want to come and do my nails properly for me?! :D

this is what happened to me. i had a set put on and she filed the actual nail. not the tip, but the whole of the nail. she was at it for ages. then when she put the 'nail' on it was agony. the stuff she used made my nails sting and it hurt for ages. she told me it was because it was the first time that i'd had false nails on and that next time it would be alright.

the time i went back to have them filled she filed them down even further and they bled.

that night i went to a friend and she took them off for me and ive never had them done again.

all they should do is when they glue the tip on, is file the VERY edge of the false nail so it thins out and isnt noticeable. We lost marks in our exam if we touched the natural nail
