We haven't had her for 2 weeks yet and Mills already seems to have her first cold, or at least a very snotty nose. We don't have one of these suction thingymajigs, will she still be alright? What can I do to help her? No temperature involved and she's alert as ever, just obviously blocked, which annoys her when feeding.

Awwww bless. Cold's are awful things. You can buy saline nasal drops with are really helpful when it comes to unblocking the nose. I used to use them before feeding when E had a cold. I always found the sucker things to be a bit rubbish to be honest.

You can also put a drop of children's Karvol on a muslin and put it near her cot/moses basket. Although I would suggest you check the label on this as I'm not sure if it's from 3months onwards.

If she is really bad you can also take her into a steamy room and that should help clear the passges. I used to run the shower in the bathroom and get it all steamy, strip Evie off and take her in for a minute or two. It worked for us.

Hope she feels better soon

Angel was the same at her age. I was told there isn't much you can do but like at night raise her mattress with a towel or something just to help her along. I've never had one of those snot suckers and i don't think i ever could. :puke: :puke:

Thank you, to both of you.

I'll try the raised mattress tonight and will do the steam thing if it gets worse. At the moment she's asleep on my arm.

Also thanks for saying that Angel was the same at Mills' age, Lisa. I kind of felt a bit like a failure for letting her get ill already.

Nooo, not your fault. Could be anything, down to a bit of irritation in the air. They've been protected in the womb for so long it could just be a bit of dust or something, or so my HV said.
Angel had it 4 times in 6 months! I thought i was failing her too, but it's just one of those things.

Olivia was quite snuffly for the first few weeks as well - it never developed into a cold, although I kept worrying about it. Raising the mattress and the steamy room thing helped though. Don't panic, hun. Like Lisa1986 says, it is probably irritation in the air. Or she may still have some mucus or whatnot from the womb that is gradually shifting.

Jess was quite bunged up from birth so the midwife recommended saline nasal drops which she wasn't too happy about but helped. She is just getting over her first cold- she was meant to have her first immunisations last week which were cancelled due to her cold but doc prescribed more nasal drops and I bought that tubey thing you suck through (I'm sure it has a technical name). Sounds really gross but it does have a filter and when bubba is that uncomfortable you would suck it out directly just to make 'em feel better. Again Jess isn't to keen on it but has been a great help.

I was listening to the radio the other day when the presenter way saying about how he sucked his babies boogers out, i almost retched, itll come out when she sneezes, poor lil thing i have got much advice but when Flo was a bit like this some radox in the bath and having her in the room helped alot

I use really thin tweezers while she's asleep :D And we put a cotton bud sideways at the front of the nostril and twirl and that can often get the boogers out too.

ollie still has his cold but its better than it was. i raised his mattress, did the stamy room thing, got the doc to prescribe saline nasal drops and bought a NUK docongester (which was great and cheap)

hope your lo is better soon.
