SMA Staydown and Constipiation

Guest
I don't know if anyone else's baby is on SMA Staydown, but does it make them constipated, or their poo's really hard and less frequent? Damien is struggling to go, often strains but nothing comes out.

The GP's and pharmacist say 'just give him more water or juice' but he doesn't drink alot of it, he prefers his milk. Is it sugar and brown water which is the other thing to try? Is there anything else I can give him? He must be so backed up :(

yuck brown water :moon:

yeh i think i heard people mention brown sugar. my health visitor said to try one teaspoon of orange juice with water.

i thought he was on a different formula? did he change?
hope he feels better soon.

xx

Alex's poos were normal on staydown. Orange juice, prune juice or sugar water should do the trick.

He was on Omneo Comfort, but due to a big decrease in income I needed to find a reflux milk on prescription, and this is about the only one, Omneo wasn't.

He's been like this for at least a week now, maybe 2, but has been on the milk about 3 weeks I think. Should you dilute the fresh orange then? Does it matter if it's made from concentrate or should it be proper orange? I'm trying brown sugar (2 tsps in 9oz water) to see if it does the trick. He's taken 7oz of it, aswell as having 8oz of milk half an hour ago! Piggy baby, can't be that bad! I shall see if this works, if not I'll try orange juice. Prune juice is rank, reminds me of being constipated when I was a kid! lol

Sami, read my thread i am so cross !!! Be careful with constipation. i tried everything but the brown sugar and nothing worked. He is on lactulose twice a day now but will reduce it to once a day now see if it gets better.

Good luck

Oh hun what a polaver :( Is Thomas okie? Damien is going every few days, but it's rock hard like a pebble and he gets really worked up trying to go. The docs wouldn't give me anything to help him go.

He is ok now thanks :)

Thomas started doing this once i put him on formula milk. he started with his poos getting harder, then him pushing hard to get them out. then it went that Thomas pushed for 4 days without any success. When it did come out, there were screams, he tore his anus twice and it is just unbearable to watch, even his dad had to leave the room because he could not see thomas in such a pain. once the Gp acknoledge he was constipated ( had to take his poo there for her to agree) she told me just to give him water or juice. the problem is thomas does not take any so difficult. In the ned, i went to the NHS walking centre and the doctor there gave me the lactulose. This is a saviour Sami. He is going twice a day and the second one was an explosive one today so i will see with once a day if he still goes ok. He panicks though each time he wants to poo, he starts crying but then he realises he is not in pain so he relaxes more.

Try massaging around his belly button. start on the left hand side of his belly button with one finger and then do a spiral shape until you arrive to the groin but be careful there is a spot on the right hand side near his groin if you press, you have a pray of wee coming out ;)

just watch out if Damian cries. a baby starining for a poo is normal but as soon as he cries ( in thomas case he was screaming) this means something is not normal. If damian goes less than every 3 days, you need to see another gp and ask for lactulose. My mum sent me from france some suppositories to help him go as the chemist and gps refused to give me some. i am sorry to say but this NHS system is rubbish, especially when my son's health is in cause, i hate it!!!!!

sorry for long reply

Oh the poor thing :( I am so sorry hun.

I know what you mean abotu the NHS, I have had big run-ins with them with Damien so far, about him stopping breathing, his reflux, him being prem, everything. I have to kick and scream to get anywhere with them. I will see how he goes, but he is getting more frustrated every day. Will see how the sugar water works. As a rule Damien will not take juice or water unless it's from a bottle, and obviously this isn't advised. We did find a beaker but it takes him an hour to drink even a few ounces so I gave up after 2 weeks! And sugar water can't be good regularly for his teeth :?

And your english was fine  (I click edit after all my posts and correct all the cock ups I made !! )

they make you feel you have just made up some illnesses  Last time i went for me, i complained about my knees and ankles, being very painful at times. i told her that my sister had an operation of her knee and my brother had similar problems. Well, she told me that she never knew of anything heriditary with knees and that it must be from carrying thomas. she did not even want to check them!!!

thomas has suffered from a runny nose since the age of 2 weeks old, i have been told it goes away after a few weeks. Well, if 20 weeks is just a few weeks, it has not disappeared yet. now he caughs all the time on top of it but i worry for nothing

the best was when i was pregnant. i asked her if she could sign me off for a week or two because i was so exhausted i found myself sleeping at the weel of the car while driving ( you know those seconds of sleep) She told me i was bound to be tired and to start my maternity leave earlier if i wanted to be off . Well if i could have afforded it, i would have but had to go back to work full time after 4 months of maternity leave.

Rebecca is on SMA Staydown for the past 2 months-the only perk I feel is that you get it on prescription!

Rebecca is severely constipated due to this milk, and is on suppositries daily as when she poos it is so hard and compact it looks agony when it comes out her bottom.

Not being rude but it's like rabbit pellets and I accidently dropped 1 on the floor (it rolled off her changing unit) and it was like dropping a stone on the floor. It's not fair on her as if bloody reflux isn't enough for them to deal with!!

Sami, I hope lil Damo is different from Rebecca, we tried brown sugar, prune, pineapple and orange juice, but no luck, and the suppositries she has been given-glycerol cause her severe stomach cramps. . Reflux and constipation are one of the two worst things a baby has to deal with. :(

Oh and what really p*sses me off no end, is that because she is putting on weight and looks healthy they "aren't overly concerned". Come on a baby spewing it's gutts up constantly and screaming doing a poo is not a healthy or HAPPY baby.
