Anyone have one?

I've gone a few months now without a night terror and thought I was over them. Had two last night which left me very upset then nightmares for the rest of the night.

Now I know I'll be having them consistantly for a few days or weeks until I get over this bout.

They are so real, it's horrible. I always end up out of bed, walking around and usually hurt myself. Not to mention OH gets woken up! Just sick of them now.

I suffered with night terrors until I was about 12 - they were terrifying for me and my mum used to sit me in the bathroom and ask me a series of questions like; name, age, where do you live, what school do you go to; etc etc. I remember getting very frustrated at her for asking me stupid questions when there was something (that I felt was) life threatening about to strike. I sometimes remembered in the morning but not others. I just grew out of it I suppose. I hope yours disappear Tonks, I totally sympathise with you xx

Did you find anything triggered it?

It's frustrating as it's not as common in adults as children. I had one person even suggest I was making it up.

Did you dream about a certain thing? Mine is always someone in my room with me or some sort of animal trying to attack me.

Your mum asking you questions is a good idea. With my last bout of episodes it was OH I was scared of and I didn't even recognise him when I was 'awake'. I would lie there terrified of the one person who would normally help!

I used to be convinced that unless I completed an impossible task then something catastrophic would happen - it was that sort of feeling, I was not in control and unable to make a difference. I never did find out what triggered it, it sort of developed from regular sleepwalking but the terrors started when we moved house and I was a little older. The farm we moved to was haunted, perhaps that had some infuence - they say children are suscpetible to the paranormal? Who knows. Have you seen a sleep specialist? It could be worth asking for a referral?

Not nice :( glad to hear you grew out of it though.

I haven't seen a sleep specialist but it is a good idea. Oddly enough this only developed as an adult. I didn't have night terrors as a child that I remember.

 i've got no experience, but i remember the last time you sayin how horrible they are, hope they stop soon for you

My hubby suffered with insomnia. I dont just mean finding it hard to sleep.....he didnt sleep for 4 days straight once and had to be sedated. Touch wood he's never had it since we've been together....I think he was pining for me and didnt even know it.....

Thanks alice

Lisa, that must have been so hard for him :( Can't believe he was up for 4 days the poor man. He must obviously be very content now if he's not had one episode since.

Last night's one was really bad, but part of the issue is I don't really remember why. I've not been as scared as last night before. OH says I turned on the lights and was walking up and down the room.

I did spend all today totally knackered with no idea why as I went to bed early. Only remembered a few hours ago why!

Hey I get them too. It's only happened in the past 3 years, so from when I was about 25. I never know what I've dreamt of only that I am so so terrified my heart actually feels like it might beat out of my chest! Sometimes by the time I actually wake up I'm leaping out of bed or on the worst occasion running down the hallway! Normally it happens when o/h is home (not v often) and it's happened on holiday - back in may last year with my friend, I sat bolt upright in bed and scared the life out of her in the next bed. Dunno what causes it but it's bloody scary even tho I never remember the dream. I am usually terrified of o/h until I wake up properly and realise it's him. Just thot I was a but nuts lol x

Found something which may help, but too early to tell atm.

Downloaded an iPhone app 'Ambiance' which plays soothing sounds. It makes up a playlist like on iTunes and you can set how long it plays for. Best night sleep I've had in ages listening to a 'woodland at twilight'.

I've never had night terrors but me and sleep just don't really go together. Apparently when I was little I didn't sleep a lot at all, and by the time I was 4 my mum was sick of speaking to Dr's about it. They gave me a sedative (I looked it up, it's actually used as an adult pre-op sedative!!) and told her to get my into my pyjamas, get me all settled and within 20 minutes I'd be asleep. Well, she tells me that wasn't the case!! Quite the opposite, I was still running round as normal even with all the sedative she could give me! I never slept through til I was about 8 and had bouts of insomnia, depending on what else is going on in life. Never 4 days though, I've always managed an hour or so, on the bad nights. I sleep walk and talk too, some scary dreams but no terrors, that sounds very distressing!!!!

Would love to hear of suggestions , My son 3 in march as night terrrors most nights and its awful

I haven't had one for ages but I used to dream about a witch sitting on my chest suffocating me and scratching at my face. I used to wake up sweating but too scared to move in case she was still in the room somewhere. I dont why they happened, but my GP told me not to eat before bed or sleep on my back and that seemed to work - I have no idea why.

I sympathise, they are dreadful things.
