When does the risk reduce?

About 2 years ago a friends nephew dies of this at 6 months and it's like a dark cloud hanging over me, until Jack gets passed this 6 month mark I don't feel relaxed and am so scared. Now i'm thinking maybe 6 months doesn't reduce risk and it's longer

Grrr, it's horrible isn't it. No signs anything is wrong it just happens, scares the living daylight out of me :(

I think it's under 12 months when the risk is greatest but don't quote me on that because I'm not certain.

I always worry about it too, I wake up a few times every night to check on Ryan so I know how you feel

90% of sids cases are within the first 6 months. I worried constantly about this, still do to a degree, but it was a relief when Dan hit 6 months old.

found this:

Q: When is SIDS most likely to occur?

A: SIDS is the leading cause of death in infants between one to 12 months old. Most SIDS deaths occur when a baby is between 2 and 4 months of age. Ninety percent of SIDS victims die before 6 months. The risk of SIDS diminishes during the first year of life. The diagnosis of SIDS is not commonly used after 1 year of age.

Sweet - it scares me to from day 1...the first day in the hospital when i had AMber i was paranoid and didnt sleep a wink kept checking she was breathing. This has got better over time though, you are not alone and think its a very natural worry for all parents.

Yes Amz.. SIDS is cot death.

I know it's probably a fear of all mummies and totally normal. Its so sad, I wish they would find out a cause and find a bloody cure. Its not fair :(

i was scared of this too and couldnt sleep at all cause i was constantly checking to see if finley was breathing. i have sinse brought a breathing mat where you put it under there matress. if baby stops breathing it sets an alarm off. they are about £60-70 but its money well spent for peace of mind.

i have an angel care monitor too :) tbh its amazing cos it has give me peace of mind, if i'm like this now can you imagine how i would have been without it

i think the risk reduces at 3 or 4 months. of course its reduced right from the start if ur in a non-smoking household and u dont co-sleep (apparently!)
i was scared of it too, and still am, altho less than i was!

I read all the info, did everything you're suppose to.............foot to feet, no smoking in pregnancy or house, no co-sleeping etc etc and still I was worried sick!! It didn't help that boys and premmies are more at risk, both of which Dan is! I would check his breathing constantly, almost obessively! I still check now, but no where near as much.
Next baby I am def buying a breathing monitor. Totally worth £70!!

 I so didn't know the risk was increased in boys! I wonder why that is. I was reading a bit today and the say sometimes it can be just due to a growth spurt. how strange :?

Not sure why

Each year, approximately 300 babies die from SIDS in the UK. It is the most common cause of death in babies over one month old. Boys tend to be more at risk of SIDS than girls. The risk is also greater for babies who are born prematurely, or who are born with a low birth weight.

found this on another site...............but its just theory

Research shows that a baby's sex plays a role in SIDS. Boys are at a higher risk than girls, approximately 60% are boys and 40% are girls. It is not known for certain why, but it's been speculated that it has to do with the fact that boys breathe at a faster rate than girls do, so if there was a toxin or high level of carbon dioxide in the air, they would reach deadly levels in their systems quicker than it would in girls.

apparently if you breastfeed and co sleep you reduce the risk of SIDS even further...

http://www.breastfeedingtaskforla.org/S ... sponse.htm

and the reason why SIDS cases increase after 1 month is because, while around 80% of mothers start bfing, by the end of 4 weeks only around half that amount continue to do so.

needless to say I'm waking every half hour to check lil miss atm... and if shes not within a few cm's I panic even more because I can't be sure shes OK    I'll never sleep now till 2009
