I am having a photo shoot this Saturday and one of the models told me she has shingles, and asked whether it was OK for pregnant women to be exposed to that?

I haven't the foggiest clue!!!

Nooooo! From what I have been told shingles and chickenpox can be dangerous in pregnancy as it's part of the herpes family

I've looked it up too, am not perfectly edified, to be honest. I called midwifery and waiting for someone to ring me back.

At least she had the good grace to tell you though bless her

I know, I was thinking the same! MW said it's best to stay on the safe side and avoid it, so that's certainly what I intend to do.

I heard shingles is highly contagious! And our immune systems are lower when preg. I wouldn't risk it x

Shingles can be nasty and something you definitely don't want to be around. Thank Goodness she let you know!

It's part of our risk assessments at work that if anyone has shingles or chicken pox, pregnant women are nt home on full pay as it can be that dangerous x x

My neice and nephew came to stay a couple of months ago and had chickenpox so I checked with doc who asked if I'd had chicken pox as a child and if so I'd have anti bodies. I couldn't remember so they did a blood test that only took a day to come back and showed I had anti bodies.
Mind you I guess if you have the option to avoid her I would - suprised she's not feeling too ill to work

You can get shingles even if you've had chickenpox.....and they hurt like hell by all accounts. I looked after one lady who had them in her eyes and ears and she was in terrible pain :(

I had shingles before I fell pregnant! Hurt like hell! U also had the work safety.I worked in a nursery so letters got sent out to parents n everything just to keep me safe.

There's something rose you have to say well clear of too...but can't think what...

I'm so thankful she told me beforehand! That's the last thing I needed!

You can't catch shingles from shingles but if you have never had chickenpox you can catch this from shingles which is particularly dangerous if you are less than 12 weeks pregnant apparently. Anyone who has had chickenpox can get shingles because it is basically the chickenpox virus that lies dormant in your system and then gets triggered to give you shingles. This can happen for loads of reasons such as stress etc, and obviously not everyone who has had chickenpox will get shingles triggered.

I work in a school and when I was 11 weeks pregnant one of my kids had shingles. I was obviously frantic but the NHS website and my midwife explained that it was probably very low risk for me as I have had both chickenpox as a child and also shingles a couple of years ago. Obviously if you don't HAVE to work with this person then I would steer clear if at all possible, as it's better to be safe than sorry, but if you have already had chickenpox it should be fairly low risk, and you could get shingles at any time anyway as it is already dormant inside you.

And on the other hand, shingles can make you feel bloody awful so does this poor girl really want to go to work anyway??!!!

She won't have to, I called my MW and she said it's best to avoid contact, so we'll pass. I don't want to take any risks whatsoever.... Even if they'd only be imaginary :p

Even if you have had chicken pox before, it's possible to get it again and you can get chicken pox from someone who has shingles. I got chicken pox from a family member who had shingles a couple years ago and I had already had chicken pox as a kid. Not everyone keeps the antibodies their whole life. Definitely stay away from her and be safe just in case. It was very considerate of her to tell you! xx
