Hello,

I'm completely new to this forum and pregnancy so hope I'm doing this right.

I'm 19 weeks pregnant and exhausted. I can't sleep well no matter how tired I get. Most nights I sleep for an hour or so then wake up and can't fall back to sleep. I am so physically drained from this it makes my heart pound and go fast when I just walk slowly up the stairs etc. I work full time but it is shift work, however I am now no longer doing night shifts. Still can't sleep.

I've been to the dr, they gave me some antihistamines which I tried once. They did nothing but made me feel strange and really sick the next day. I did not sleep.

I'm worried about my health, the baby and work because I have called in sick several times now because of this sleep problem.

Im 33 years old, average to slim build, 5ft 4. My blood pressure is typically 100/55. HR 60 if I feel ok, goes over 80 when I am exhausted like now. BP also now 115 over 55. I also get freezing cold when I don't sleep.

Can anyone help?

Thanks :)

This sounds awful Nexa. I'm afraid I haven't come across it myself or on here at all. I would speak to your midwife about it and get their advice. Only other thing I can think of is trying to get yourself into a relaxing routine, take a bath before bed with some lavender oil, put some lavender oil on your pillow that sort of thing. I'm not usually into that kind of thing but I'm getting pregnancy migraines and my midwife sent me to the holistic therapy clinic in the hospital who gave me some essential oils to try to de-stress me as they think sleep deprivation and stress (I have a 2 year old and a 1 year old already) are contributing to me getting these migraines. The oils have been nice.
Also my partner quite often has trouble 'switching off' at night - are you guilty of using a smart phone in bed etc before you go to sleep, he does this and I'm sure it's why he can't get to sleep. But anyway, what he has found helpful is listening to podcasts or audio books sometimes sends him to sleep. But also he looked up about relaxing music and found a piece of music by Marconi Union called weightless on YouTube and an article which said it is so soothing most people will fall asleep. It worked for him and I now use it for my 1 year old to fall asleep for naps - he lasts about 4 minutes maximum! X

Hi Nexa,
Sounds really horrible.
I'm also exhausted in the golden second trimester. I regularly spend whole afternoons in bed.

However i sleep well at night, well relatively well.

I'm going to try to make changes to my diet, cut out the sugar that's crept in as I've struggled with constant nausea and exhaustion. I'm also going to introduce probiotic foods to see if that will help me.

You don't mention other symptoms but i would see your doctor and rule out antenatal depression my love. Depression can start before baby is born and it causes major sleep symptoms.

Sending hugs.

Xxx

I admit I'm always exhausted and what you're going through sounds horrible. Baths usually help me get tired enough to actually fall asleep for at least a few hours before I wake up having to hit the bathroom. I would definitely talk to your midwife about this.
