My baby is 17 days old & bottle-fed, i have noticed he has reflux/wind, this isn't happening on every feed tho. Today he was very fussy when giving a feed, crying & arching his back, he was sick a few times not huge amounts, everytime he went to sleep on me I would put him in the moses basket 15 -30 mins later he would start crying/screaming this lasted a few hours. I'm not sure what to do? It really upsets me seeing him in pain!! I wind him every 2-3 min, sit him up right for 20mins after feeds. I have infacol I haven't used this yet as it doesn't happen on every feed, do I take him to the doctors? I'm looking for advice from anyone

I'd take to docs..my baby girl has reflux and she got given gaviscon around that age and it helped for a few weeks. Shes on ranitidine and anti reflux milk now xx

Hey hun, my little boy was sick after every bottle with first stage milk and had an upset stomach too, the only thing that worked for my little one was changing his milk to anti reflux and regergitation milk. He's been on this now for 2months and settled better with it and no sickness either

Went to the doctors on wed prescribed infant gaviscon, I'm giving it time to work. Yesterday was a good day he had 5oz at 4am, 6oz at 8am took nearly 2 hrs feeding he was sick, 6oz at 330, 4 oz at 6 and 6oz at 9. Today not so good 4oz at 230am, 3oz at 8 he was sick, 1oz at 930 he was sick then 1oz at 1030, 1115 and 1230. He has been sleeping since so I'm hoping next feed he will take more! He brings up wind really good.

Is this normal? Should I be concerned? Any advice would be great

My son did this but he was very windy and also brought up wind. They tend to very easily prescribe gaviscon in my experience and when weaning come it didn't get any better.. I regret never properly exploring tongue tie at the time as at a later time it just quickly got dismissed and he's severely speech delayed now too. He threw up until he was 2 years old.. at the hint sign of teething was another reason for him to vomit.. so please don't just look at reflux or colic. There's always a possibility of milk protein intolerance too and best is to get in touch with the health visitor and see whether you can first check with a lactation consultation to rule out tongue tie and if that's ruled out go though paediatrician for further advise.

At the hospital the midwife did check if he had tongue tie. I have had a few people telling me about gaviscon, he has only been taking it for 3 days I suppose il give it time to work if it does! He is also very fussy at feeding time, heavy breathing, very fidigty, desperate to have the bottle, reaching & gulping down his milk you can hear him grunting and sucking hard, sometimes he draws away from the bottle & arches his back crying which is really hard to see & very frustrating! When I took him to the gp, he didn't even weigh him he just said I can see he's putting on weight...... I was thinking u have never seen him before or know his previous weights or asked me his weight!!!! He did check his breathing & felt his belly. The last time he was weighed was 20th mar by the health visitor & he has been putting on weight, I'm going to the baby clinic next Thursday to get him weighed so I'm hoping he's putting on. It looks like he is but I want to know for peace of mind. I'm going to monitor over the weekend & if I need to I will call the health visitor for advice.

Sounds exactly like Imogen but her reflux is silent. She's on omeprazole atm as gaviscon and ranitidine didnt work for us xx

Both mine had reflux but my second much worse and ended up with gaviscon then ranitidine and the was a breast fed baby so it's rarer to get reflux. A year down the line I have realised he has a fairly significant lip tie which is different to tongue tie and doesn't really get checked for. I've read this could have actually caused the reflux! A friend of mine has two boys both who had tongue tied cut and both of whom the hospital said they didn't have and wasn't until she went to a tongue tie specialist they confirmed she wasn't mad and cut them x

Hmm this is interesting as Imogen wouldn't latch to breastfeed in the hospital and now she has all these feeding issues xx

I agree millielaura this is interesting, I have just been reading about tongue tie on NHS website most of those signs are familiar. I will be contacting my health visitor on Monday. My boy is not right, it's an absolute battle at feeding times it's exhausting

Please don't rely on a midwife or GP to rule out tongue tie - it's a highly specialised area that they are nowhere near sufficiently trained in to diagnose. Your lo needs to see an IBCLC lactation consultant for a diagnosis or ruling out of tongue tie. GPs are quick to go along with a reflux theory with no conclusive evidence which leads to babies being on all kinds of meds they don't need to be on. The NHS also do not believe that tongue tie affects bottle feeding which is nonsense. Tongue tie is often the cause of reflux and colic symptoms and is really easily treated. My lo had terrible feeding issues, lots of crying during and after feeding, could only take small amounts at once and generally very unsettled. As well as these, typical symptoms are wind, noisy feeding (you might notice a clicking if you listen), milk dribbling from their mouth, hiccups, wind and discomfort. Hope you get to the bottom of it x

So does my boy, the clicking sound he doesn't it's more of a loud sucking noise like he's sucking hard on the bottle.

I didn't even notice the clicking until it was pointed out when the IBCLC was observing a feed and then I wondered how I'd never noticed it! It's when baby is trying to move it's tongue to feed correctly but it's snapping back due to the tie. Milk leaking is a major sign because baby can't create a vacuum around the teat or breast so it leaks out the sides. I had no idea this wasn't normal either! If you google Milk Matters Huddersfield you'll find quite a bit of info on their website and case studies. If your hospital has an infant feeding support team they will have access to an IBCLC but I was told because by that point I'd switched to bottle feeding (because of the tie but I didn't know it!) I'd be back of the queue as they primarily support breast fed babies! I had to go private with Milk Matters to get my lo diagnosed and snipped xx

Oooh I'm going to have a look! We do mainly bottles now so I'd be back of queue too. Was it expensive for them to diagnose? Scared of paying when we are pretty skint atm and then it not being that at all lol. It does sound like she does though and if it'll help her I'd def do it. She seems in pain all the time with silent reflux and wind..can tongue tie cause that? Milk is always leaking out sides of her mouth lol I have the wipe with bib consgantly xxxx

Tongue tie is a very common cause of reflux and wind so yes this could definitely be the cause of your lo's problems. My lo would have been on all kinds of meds if I've just gone with my GPs advice instead of going private. The assessment was £70 and if a tie was diagnosed they would snip there and then for a total cost of £200. I highly recommend the assessment as it is in depth and involves observing feeding, examining baby and scoring baby's feeding and extent of tie. If it's not a tie they will have other recommendations for you. It is expensive but by 13 weeks and having to feed my lo round the clock as he could only take small amounts before being in pain I was at the end of my tether. It was worth every penny xx

I decided to change his milk to comfort milk for a thicker consistency. Gaviscon was making him constipated & wasn't actually doing anything. it was such a battle at feeding times & I was not happy and got really upset. I fed him the milk yesterday and what an improvement he was more settled, taking from the bottle really well no milk coming out from the sides of his mouth, no coughing or spluttering. I have read so many posts about u shouldn't keep them on comfort milk etc however if your babie is happier & settled I can't see an issue
