Hi everyone

I have a few questions which I will of course ask my HV on Monday but just wondering just now...

My baby for the last few days has been quite upset in the evenings. She's fed, changed, being cuddled etc but still crying. Her face goes red and she kicks her legs and throws her arms about. It goes on for a few hours but not constant, she falls asleep in between but starts crying again when she wakes up. She's fine during the day. Does this sound like colic?

Also noticed her bum is looking a bit red. Not on the cheeks but inside the cheeks. Can I use anything on this whilst she's so young? I tried lying her on a towel with no nappy to air her bum a bit but she started crying after a few minutes. Could it be the wipes? Maybe I should go back to cotton wool? X

Use Vaseline or sudocrem on her bum, using sparingly, not loads. I'm not sure on colic, maybe try infacol before her feeds to see if that helps x

Does she arch her back when she gets upset? Sounds pretty similar to my lg & she has colic :(
Could be wipes... my hv told me to go back to cotton wool for a while as her bum was looking red. I use vasaline on her bum. Did the same woth my lb and he never got nappy rash. Xx

Hmm... so she does not cry during the day? My boy had colic and he was screaming in pain (or what appeared to be in pain) at all times for hours. Just a thought - you may want to find a local baby massage course which may help one way or the other.

I also use sudocrem too for sore bum.

xx

Are you drying her bum after using the wipes. My Lo started with a little rash but went away quickly once I was doubly making sure she was dry and not damp.

It does sound like colic, does she arch her back? Colic is awful my Lo suffered for 8 weeks. Tummy rubs seemed to help and a warm flannel on her tummy

She cries during the day but just normal cries you can soothe by feeding her, changing her or giving her a cuddle. The cries in the evening are different and nhs website says colic mostly occurs in the late afternoon or evenings, that's why I was thinking colic. I'm definitely going to go to baby massage too, just need to wait until she's 6 weeks first. Thanks.

Ive not been drying her bum after I wipe...I'll start doing that now and see if it clears up. It's not looking too bad so hopefully that's all it takes to sort it out. Thanks x

Colic is bloody vile and, unfortunately, it sounds like bubs is suffering. Gripe water is fab stuff, you just need to keep trying different positions to help bring up wind and settle her tum. I would avoid creams, things like sudocrem can sting raw skin and stop the nappy from working which makes the rash worse. I would go back to water and cotton wool, a couple of minutes of nappy free time per change (literally one or two) and it should clear up pretty quick :)

Sounds like it could also be reflux. HV will hopefully help you out but if not see a doctor to be sure.

For rash I'd probably use a bit of sudocream in the meantime along with lots of nappy free time. We dry after every change and still get a bit if rash. We only use the pampers sensitive wipes as it was worse with other ones. Water and cotton wool is probably best especially early on. Also found a bath seems to help rash a lot.

Old wives remedy is to put an egg white on rash as it seals it and should protect it. I've used it once but after lots of air time so not sure if it helped or not. Also not sure about possible allergies?! My mum and granny always used it apparently and swear by it.

It could be colic which tends to be worse late afternoon/evening. You could try Dentinox drops or Infacol and see if it helps? For her bum maybe try a small amount of Metanium or Sudocrem and a bit of air drying xx
