question about paint

we have got a second-hand cot from my sister, which we are considering sanding-down and painting. is it safe for me to use paint, and if so are there certain types which i should use over others?

I was told to just wear a dust mask to be safe but we painted an entire house when i was pregnant!! So long as the room is well vetilated, open all the windows and take breaks.

I am not painting the nursery letting DH and best friend do it
