Hi All,

Monday I handed in my resignation notice.
Yesterday I signed and posted my new job contract.
Last night I found out I was pregnant.

Both of these mean so much to me and I have been waiting for both for some time now.

I am very career minded and of course would like to work up the ranks but I feel that I will leave a very sour taste for my new employer when I tell them I am pregnant during the probabtion period.

How would you handle it?

Any advise?

I appreciate any support possible.
My head is all over the place right now - two blessings are overwhelming!!

How long is your probation period? If 3 months or less, I would be inclined to not tell them until it's over. You're not obliged to tell them until 25 weeks anyway. Congratulations on both the job and the bump!

it's 6 months so I would say it will end in January.

I was thinking of informing them after 25 weeks anyway which falls in October unless I start showing earlier.

and thank you :))

Yes I would avoid telling them until after probationary period. Tell them at 25 weeks!

Congrats xx

Congratulations on your new job and baby news :)

Your probation period ends when you'll be about to take maternity leave so obviously you won't be able to wait until then to say. So really it's not actually going to matter when you tell them, they can't get rid of you during the probation period anyway so I would go with the honesty policy and tell them once you've had your dating scan. They'll appreciate that more than you say trying to hide it until 25 weeks, when you'll still be in the middle of your probation period anyway. Hope that makes sense! It's ultimately your decision xx

You know what, I didnt think of it like this at all and all this time I have felt guilty because I feel Im doing wrong to my new employer by being pregnant.

I will go in and familiarise myself with them/environment and make a judgement call from there.

I am VERY VERY scared and I didnt intend for both to fall at the same time.

I agree, I would tell them sooner rather then later as you'll still be in your probation period either way, I'm sure they'd appreciate your honesty.

xx

appreciating the good "right thing to do" advice - I actually feel bad for the new employer on the one hand because this department is new, ive taken up a new role which will shape the department too. They will provide extensive training and once Im ready to be left to my devices, I will bugger off lol

On the other hand - I deserve this job and I know I am hardworking.

Ohh I didn't notice the 6 month period either, sorry. I agree, tell them after the 12 week scan in that instance

Definitely go in and get to know them, then you'll know who you feel most comfortable to inform initially. I really do think telling them after the scan is the right/best thing to do. And I'm sure they'll see you're so fantastic at your job they'll b desperate for you to be back after mat leave ;) xx

It's impossible to plan these things. I landed a job I really wanted a few months before finding out I was pregnant. I've not told them yet but I really want to come back to this same job. Luckily this was an in-company promotion so I don't have to worry about a probation period, but, like you I'm very nervous about telling them.

I'd just knock their socks off, show them hoe good you are and then when you tell them your news, emphasise how much you are enjoying it and how much of an impact you hope to continue making on your return. :) I'm very career minded as well so I know how you feel.

Hi JustTrying,

I realise I'm a bit late to this thread but I agree with everything everyones put - I would break the news at the earliest after your 12 week scan, maybe leave it a bit longer, 20 weeks, and then tell them then.

I say leave it a little longer than the 12 weeks simply because then you are truly out of the really early stages of pregnancy, and if anything happened and you lost the baby (not that you will, but just on the rare case you did), you wouldn't have to then break the bad news to your employer. You know how gossipy offices can be as well.

Many many congratulations and all the best! I am sure they will be happy for you all the while being excited for you to come back to your dream role once your bundle of joy has arrived and settled!

x
