update mon 11th aug - just got back from the docs. connor obligingly did another big green poo just before we left, so i took it with me ( :puke: ). its been sent off for tests and we'll hopefully get the results by friday. he's still his usual happy self and the doc was v impressed with his development and how smiley & alert he is :D she thinks there's a chance it might be mild gastroenteritis, but there wouldn't be any treatment cos he's not poorly with it.

i can't go to breast feeding cafe today though cos gastroenteritis is usually viral :( i'm not quite sure what i'm going to do with myself!! i should do housework but i'll probably spend most of my day on the computer

thanks for all the advice ladies

update - connor was happily bouncing away in his jumperoo when i realised that there was lots of runny green poo down his legs which he was merrily trampling into my beloved cream carpets :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: he seems totally unperturbed by it - i'm suffering far worse!!! :?

***

connor's poo has been green/v dark for the past 3 days :( he's been doing 1 per day, which is also most unlike him (its usually every 2 days at 9am  )

he doesn't seem unwell so i'm not sure that its a stomach upset. but the only other reason for it, that i can think of, would be if he was getting too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk - but he's emptying my boobs completely and i have no worries on that score either.

he's still feeding every 2 hours (or less) and i read somewhere that sometime babies gall bladders can't keep up with regular feeds so bile can get into their poo   but then he's always fed this frequently and we haven't had this problem before...

he's still his usual happy self so i'm not toooo worried, but i also know that green poo isn't normal :(

any thoughts? or am i off to the docs on monday?

Could u have eaten something mabey!? That has got thru to him, thats green!?

Apart from that, my LO had green poo, milk was changed to prescription neocate, and hes had grey :puke: poo ever since...!

Baby Centre

A baby who is being exclusively breastfed usually has stools which are bright yellow, sweet-smelling and the consistency of scrambled eggs. If you introduce anything else into a baby's diet, like formula or solids, then the stools will change, usually to become more like an adult's (more brown, solid and foul smelling).

Green stools in a baby who is receiving nothing but breastmilk are a warning sign that all is not well. If your baby's stools are nearly always green and if he is not gaining weight well even though your milk supply seems fine, then it could be that he is getting too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk. As the foremilk is more dilute, with more lactose and less calories, it stimulates your baby's digestive tract to move the milk along too fast producing green, often explosive, nappies!

If you are taking him off the first breast before he comes off spontaneously, try waiting until your baby finishes the first breast to get enough hindmilk before offering the second breast; it may even be that he will only need one breast per feed. Ask a breastfeeding counsellor or infant feeding specialist to check that your baby is properly latched on and that he is managing to extract all the calorie-rich hindmilk.

Consistently green stools could also be a warning that your baby is sensitive to something. Is he on any medication? If not, could he be sensitive to any medicines that you are taking, like iron supplements or antibiotics? Very occasionally, a baby can become sensitive to something in his mother's diet which is passed to him through her breastmilk. In this case other symptoms, such as eczema or a rash, may be present. It can be hard to pinpoint the trigger. If you suspect your baby has a food allergy or intolerance, you should talk it through with a dietitian or breastfeeding counsellor. Your baby may also have diarrhoea if he has a viral or bacterial infection, in which case, make an appointment to see your GP.

You are exclusively breastfeeding aren't you? because i know its pretty normal in formula fed babies but a sign of something being wrong in breastfed babies-found the above at baby centre although thats not much help as you already said he is draining your breasts so its not that hes getting too much foremilk...?! not sure what to suggest, a trip to the GP just to check him over is probably the best thing! I hope hes ok...

He seemed happy enough yesterday so I wouldn't worry too much hun. See how he goes the rest of the weekend and perhaps giev NHS Direct a call and see if they think it is something to worry about. You know him better than anyone so if you think it would make you feel better seeing a doctor about it then do it for your own peace of mind.

Let us know how he goes xxxx

I had a chinese the other week and Coopers poo was alot darker and greenish.. it was the colour of the sauce in the food. Have you eaten anything that you can think of? Hope Connor is ok xx

I know this is going to sound random but have you been drinking or eating orange juice??? Its just I remember having the same thing with Tia once... I had no idea what it was and the midwife asked me and I realised that I'd been drinking it to help increase my iron intake... It might not be that at all... but just an idea.. :)

April's poo always goes green after I have chinese too!!

nope, no chinese, no orange juice...  i honestly can't think of anything i've eaten or drunk that would have made a difference. his temperature last night was 35.8 so nothing untoward there. i'm awaiting today's poo with interest!!

as an aside though (and i doubt that its connected to the poos) connor had a bad evening yesterday, but eventually came to bed with us just after midnight. he woke up a few times but i got him settled without feeding til 7.30am!!!!!! i can't believe he went that long  he's just fed for britain now, mind you. i hope this really is the start of him sleeping at night...

ETA: i think he just heard me type that - i just changed his nappy and found more green poo :( not much, but a little. and his nappy isn't as wet as it usually would be - but then he didn't feed overnight so i'm presuming that's why  he's wriggling, smiling and squeaking away on his playgym at the mo so i'm still not too concerned. but its off to the docs tomorrow for us i think.

thanks for all the advice girls

aww hugs lil man , and hugs for mummy dealing with green poop poop ! saying that i had 7 ! YES 7 poorey really smelly nappies yesterday ! i dont think he could have possibly pooped anymore !

Could it be the heat at the moment? Nursery told me a few of the babies have been having weird poos at the mo and it could be related to the heat. Not sure why though. Ryan's have been greeny black recently and he hasn't eaten anything he usually wouldn't and he's a lot older than yours...

leland poop has gone blacky too , im blaiming solids !

least he isnt feeling unwell with what ever it is tho  i shall watch out for greeny style poops coming my way with the amount of time they spent together on sat !

i know... i'm a bit worried now that he might have passed something on to the babies at the meet. i feel awful about it :( :( :( i really hope he hasn't. the green poo he did on thursday wasn't runny, so i didn't too much about it. then he didn't do one on friday til we got back from the meet. they've got runnier since though.

i really hope leland stays ok (bar his rash, poor boy  ) - hope you haven't had a repetition of those 7 nappies from saturday either!!

nope , no idea what on earth the 7 nappies where about ! and some where stealth poo's too :puke: but he was back to 1 yesterday and so far just 1 huge one this morning :rotfl:

god dont we talk about such loverly things now where mums

im sure he hasnt passed on anything , by that description about sounds like his not getting your hind milk but i know nothing about that !
