Hi there,

I am completely new to this forum - have been browsing a few over the past few months but never actually posted anything so am nervous but hoping I might be able to get some advice/support from you guys as I am feeling really low at the moment.

I am 32 and have been TTC for 2 yrs now. I did get pregnant before in my late teens (not with my now husband) but it wasn't to be. No other children.

Me and the hubby got all our tests etc done he was told he had severe low sperm count (i think about 1 million) we went to see an NHS specialist and beacuse I had my blood tests done on the wrong day (day 11 my FSH was high) she said we could have IVF but when she saw my blood test results said we needed to have a doner (even though test were done on wrong day) and I was heartbroken.

Anyway I got my tests redone on day 2 of cycle and I just got my results back too which has left me still devastated.

My results
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) 12.1, Lieutenising hormone (LH) 6.4 , Oestradiol (E2) 131 Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) 1.69, Prolactin 154, Testosterone 1.0.

I know from reading up that my FSH is high and it also seems my Oestradiol is high too?

I haven't actually had a consultation since having these results back as I asked for them to be emailed to me as my appointment isn't until end of Oct now. Kinda wishing I had waited as I am now reading lots of information on the web and coming to all sorts of conclusions.

I know I need to wait till the consultation but I am sure you all know what it is like waiting for this! So my questions are:
- Are my results really bad
- can anything be done for the severe low sperm count?

I am really annoyed at how bad the NHS dr was, I was immediately told about egg doners and offered counselling after my incorrect blood test results.

Any support really appreciated
Many thanks
Louise x

Hiya,

First of all, welcome to the forum, its a great support network :)

I don't really know much about FSH or what days they should be done on etc but if they were done on the wrong day its a bit ridiculous to tell you you need an egg donor when their results could be inaccurate. I think I had mine done on a random day but the reference sheet it had what the results should show at each part of the cycle and mine was within. I hope that makes sense.
In regards to increasing sperm, my OH takes wellman conception. He didn't have low count but he had pretty low motility, the progressive motility was only 18%. After taking the vits, its is now 80% if I remember correctly so a substantial difference, I am sure it can help with count too. If your OH smokes that could also have an impact on count.

Hope that helps a little bit x

There are 2 types of tests that are related to your egg produce AMH = egg amount FSH = egg quality
I had a very now AMH but ok FSH, FSH anything over 10 is meant to mean you have very poor quality of eggs and I know from experience that they will try to push you towards the donor route if this is the case. However that said some ladies have still managed to fall pregnant with thier own eggs with a low AMH or high FSH. I know it's devastating when you get that news I struggled to hold it together in front of the consultant when I heard the news.

Don't give up yet though Hun explore all avenues before you go down the donor route, I am glad I persisted :-)

The fsh is very high, do you mind me asking how old you are? I think they take both together when they deal with that. I don't know a huge amount about that though.

But on the sperm thing, yes they can work with that. My oh's sperm count is about 0.4m/mil so a little less than yours. At this low a value you'll need to use ICSI where they inject a single sperm into each egg. I'm currently a few weeks away from having a child this way and someone else on here is about 20 weeks pregnant, her oh has about the same count to yours.

it takes about 3 months to replace the sperm in the testes so you'll probably be offered another test after this long to check his test isn't a one off due to illness or something like that. It's worth looking at diet, smoking, drinking and taking a male preconception vitamin to give them a good chance to improve. It's rare to see a big change in count from this level but you want to make sure that the few you have are in the best of health ready for when you get treatment.

Good luck. We felt like the sky fell down when we got our diagnosis and it's been a long hard journey but we'd do it all again to be where we are now.
