Has anyone taken Piriton whilst being in the third trimester?
Only reason I ask is my doctor prescribed me piriton due to bad itchyness/rashes on my hands, feet and ribs. They didnt tell me any side effects ect and when I went to the pharmacy to sort the perscription out, they told me it can cause problems to the baby and can cause premature births.

If this was even a slight risk or problems, why did the doctor not tell me?
I just wanted to know if anyone has taken Piriton at this stage of the pregnancy and if they had any bad side effects (to them or their baby).
I'm so confused I haven't taken any but calmomile lotion doesnt help the slightest and I don't know what tablets I can take thats safe.

That's really bad your doctor didn't say anything! I haven't taken it whilst pregnant but I did ask my doc a couple of months ago about Piriton as I usually take it for hay fever. My doctor couldn't say what any potential effects might be as no testing has been done (it's not ethical to test drugs on pregnant women / unborn babies). He said all he could do was advise me that no testing had been done, then went on to say that I should weigh up any potential risks (alebit unknown!) against the advantages I would gain personally (ie not having hay fever!) by taking it.

I decided not to take it in the end, and as a result have spent the last few weeks sneezing, sniffling, coughing and with red runny eyes....I figured I would rather do that than worry if I was doing any harm, even if the risks are low and results unknown

I totally agree with you Inky, I am very annoyed with the doctors for not mentioning it to me.
I have got the bottle of Piriton at home as I had other items on the perscription and the pharmacist wouldn't let me take the others on the list and leave the piriton unless I paid for all the items seperately.
I have refused to take the Piriton as I don't want to put my baby in any risk.
Thank you for your reply x

hey hun im on a piriton an also at ur stage in liquid form an no one has mentioned side effects on how its affecting urself or the baby but u do need to take it its the only way its going to ease the itching because it wont stop an if u itch more it will get realllllllly bad. if the gp have been saying this then u need to go to ur local a n e or something an say uve been itching an get tested properly again for that OC cos it might only just becoming out in so at first it might say u havent got it but the only thing u can take is piriton an nother form of sumet to get my bile acids down but no one has mentioned the side effects an its worrying if they said that to you which no one has said this to me bout the baby an wat not.
get in touch with ur midwife hun an tell her wat ur gp said let me no how u get on?
also piriton can make u very tired so dont drive wen u take it cos it makes me so sleepy x

Hubby has just told me the same as ive just mentioned this n he sed my doctor wasnt going to prescribe this only for the fact that it make the baby drowsy and sleepy so im not guna take it for wen im in labour else ill be there all night with the baby being sleepy alot thats the only reason why docs say its a side effect its not actually harming the baby hun.
although if i get to see me midwife again ill ask why have they got to give me that knowing that it makes the baby really drowsy and sleepy x

Thanks for all the info hun. When I actually get some proper time I will ask the midwife or doctor all this.
I have my 34 week scan Friday to see if I still have a low lying placenta....so fingers crossed that I havent and also I'm hoping she is still not breach as I really want a home birth now but wont be able to if she is either.
Anyway I may ask someone at the hopital friday otherwise I have a mw app the following tuesday which I'll wait for if it doesnt get worse. If it does it will just mean I'll have to take a trip up to the doctors again :(
Hope all is well with you hun xx
