Has anybody heard that you shouldn't eat pineapple during pregnancy?

I've been eating fresh pineapple everyday and someone in the office has just told me I shouldn't eat it as it brings on early labour...something to do with an enzyme in it...

That's the first time I've heard this babes. xxx

Sorry I can't be of much help. xxx

It's one of those old wives' tales - if you're overdue then pineapple is supposed to help bring on your labour. like sex and hot curry

It hasn't worked for anyone I know who's tried it, and it certainly wouldn't have any effect before baby's ready!

You can eat it anytime you like, but it's well known in Tri 3 to be an attempt at labour!

I've been eating a pineapple a day for the past 2 weeks or so, and it's done nothing for me.

I'd say if you want it then you can have it, but I wouldn't recommend whole pineapples like I've been doing! Things affect people differently and while it's had no effect on me, it might have a different affect for you...

I think after that much pineapple you might just end up turning into one!!!

Think I'm proof it doesn't work LOL 6 days overdue and counting! :)

I'm an expert on cutting and dicing fresh pineapples though! :)

Its an old wives tale, I ate loads of the stuff when I was overdue and it did nothing. Its the wrong type of enzyme.

Founbd this

Does pineapple bring on labour?
Pineapple apparently contains an enzyme called 'bromelain'. Bromelain helps promote the production of chemicals called 'prostaglandins'. Prostaglandins occur naturally in the body. There are a number of different prostaglandins. Each one has a specific, localised effect on certain parts of the body. For example, one type of prostaglandin helps 'ripen' (or soften) the cervix ready for labour to start, and a synthetic version of this particular prostaglandin is used in gel or pessary form to help induce labour in hospital. However, this type of prostaglandin is not the type that bromelain is said to boost - so eating pineapple (or, indeed, any other foods that make this claim) will not help the production of the prostaglandins needed to 'bring on' labour. The pineapple myth is a worrying example of over-simplification of complicated physiology by people who really should know better.
