Phantom cigarette smell

It is doing my head in. I think it is because I have been coming down with something for about a month now but my immune system has managed to so far hold it off. It has been lingering in my throat and tonsils. I went to a tenants house yesterday and they were just putting a ciggarette out as I got there. Now all I can smell is smoke. It is really doing my head in. Now I can feel the illness creeping into me again. Why cant it be a nice smell I can smell?

Has anybody else had this? How long does it last?
