was just wondering at what age I can introduce smooth peanut butter. Seren likes her to ast but I was wanting to put some spreads on it.

most health profssionals advice not to give peanuts before the age of 2-3 years, as they are highly allergenic. (i have to say i've been naughty and eaten loads of peanuts whilst PG and BFing...)

then i found this which is maybe a bit too extreme unless there's a family history of allergy...

Peanuts are best avoided in children until seven years of age. In those without allergy risk factors, only smooth peanut butter is appropriate in the smallest amount in a sandwich. Peanuts and peanut butter have properties that cause them to easily stick in the back of the mouth, which can cause gagging and choking. If inhaled, they cause problems not only because of blocking the airway but also because of inflammation around the area where it lodges in the airway if the child survives the intial choking episode.

just trying to think what other spreads you could use.... *thinking hard*

I've never bothered about the allergy warnings for peanuts :shakehead: I think people are just panicking too much over everything nowadays. I obviously wouldn't give Reece an actual whole peanut incase he chokes but he's had a taste or Carls peanut butter before (not sure how much though as I have to leave the room if anyone is eating peanut butter- its nasty stuff :puke: ) and he's had a taste of some Reeses Pieces too... although they're prob not real peanut butter :?

what a about a little bit of pate? I only recently gave jess peanut butter and was watching her like a hawk. I saw this wee girl, quite young on Yorkhill hospital who had a bad reaction. The parents gave her peanut butter once and she was fine but the second time it had a bad reaction. I didnt realise its the 2nd time they are given something they become allergic. The 1st time the body decides it doesnt like it and sets up the barriers so the next time is when the allergy occurs. Scary!

BTW, she hated the peanut butter. :(

that quote is scary! I know what it means about it being "sticky" though, it is probably quite hard for them to swallow. Ill probably avoid nuts til she is about 2 although there are no allergies in the family. How about a cheese spread like philidelphia, this is what the HV recommended to me.

I believe a lot of the furore over peanut allergens has to do with the chemical pesticides sprayed on the crops.

There's some really nice organic butters on the market so if you were going to go for it they might be a better idea? :)

Oh God, Zara loves smooth peanut butter. I read it was good to introduce for protein but she only has the slightest scraping.

Well Beanie... African kiddies rely on peanut butter. It's used from an early age - probably most nutritious food most of them have! I did use it with my other two - just haven't got round to it this time!

We haven't introduced it yet. I have no problem waiting another year because I'm much more concerned with getting her to eat her veggies at the moment. She is soooo picky with them. :wall:

marmites another alternative although i cant satnd the stuff, yack

Are they allowed marmite then? I was worried because of the salt? x

My HV said yes but apparently marmite themselves say not til they're over 1?

Hi

I would think cream cheese would be a good choice if you wanna wait on the pb, but i read soemwhere that if you were to give them pb to give them the crunchy kind? which is teh total oposite of what petchy had read.
Prob didnt help much  sorry.
