When I go back to work part time in October MIL is going to do 1 day a week of looking after Maisie.

We have never mentioned money and don't know if she expects any but we thought maybe we should give her something?

What do you pay parents/in laws etc? Is £20 ok do you think or not? I think nurseries round here are about £30-40 a day?

Thanks :D

no advice on amount hun but maybe ask her as she may be a bit offended if you try and pay her i know my mum would be

no idea.
As mary said though if shes maisies granny then she may not expect paying for it. If it were your sister or somethingthen its another matter.
What you could do is give your MIL Maisies child benefit money and sign a months worth. Then your MIL can treat herself each month.
My sister did that with my mumand it worked a treat.

MIL wont take anything for looking after Oran so we just give her £10 a week which she takes as we say its for phone credit incase she needs us lol

My mum is looking after Lola when i go back to work and has said she doesn't want anything off us :)

My mum wanted £200 a week. I thought that was far too much myself and never went back full time.

what!!!!!!! £200.

For the sake of 1 day a week I probably wouldnt bring up the subject of money. I would just organise it so she doesnt have to be buying anything, like nappies or wipes and make the 1 day as problem free as possible.

£200 a week!! thats a bit harsh from your mum!!

Yes Laura, I do provide the nappies, wipes and I got them a cot and gave them my M&P Pram when I got my Maclaren. I did provide all the food when he was on jars but now he is on real food she said its ok as he just eats what they do and its only small portions so she said an extra potatoe to cook doesnt matter, I do chuck snacks in his bag though even though she said its ok, she still uses them lol.

I didn't pay my mam for looking after Lydia when I was at uni....I'm going back to uni in Sept and she'll be watching the kids then (she'll only have them for 6 hours a week), and payment hasn't been mentioned.

Having said that, if I was working full time I would offer something. Not sure how much.

For 6 hours a week it hardly seems necessary. I'll literally drop them off, she'll feed them, and then I'll be back to get them!

£200 a week was to mind Jess for the whole week not just one day but I still thought it was too much. She wanted as much money as she would get if she worked full time and thats probably all I could earn any way so no chance!

Thats more than Childminders and Nurserys though! Mind you if she was giving up work to do it and needed the money then I understand why she wanted that much, my MIL doesnt work and does nothing except go for walks anyway

That's ridiculous as you wouldn't be able to claim the childcare element of WTC as I assume she's not a registered childcare professional!

yep, and also, you wouldnt be able to claim anything through tax credits for it as she wasnt (im presumming) a registered child minder.

Plus even if registered if they are your family (through blood or marriage!) you can not claim WTC - I think this is wrong, as if you have say a sister or something who is a childcarer you would most likley want her to car for your child rather than a strange but still be paying her full time as its her carear so I dont see why this should mean you cant claim for help if you are entitled to it! ...........thats another rant altogether! :rotfl:

£200

Will get OH to speak to her since it is his mum. I am going back 2 days to start and he is gong to do flexihours so he can have her one day and his mum the other day.

Thanks everyone :D
