where is the pain? i had a lot of pain with renee for about a week.

is it painful the whole time she's feeding?

is the pain your nipples only or is it a shooting pain in your breasts?
is the pain before feeding (any time) or is it when you start to feed or is it all the time whilst you ae feeding?
are your breasts red? do they feel hot? are they lumpy and painful .?

hiya thanks for your replys its not really my nipples its around them
its like as if she is chewing around them
the pain is when she first latches on all the time
but in the evening she is feeding constantly and the pain is there all through her feed
they are not hot or lumpy
but a little red around the nipple
thsnks emma x

it could be a painful let down reflex. i had one of those. But that usually eases during a feed.

if there is pain whilst feeding it could be one of two things. Thrush opr mastitis. Its more likely to be thrush if there is no redness to the breast.

are you still seeing your midwife?

aww
im not sure what the pain ur feeling could be, but hav u tried nipple shields?
x

i wouldn't recommend nipple shields as yet. you need to get to the root of the pain before taking any action. :)

Has anyone checked your latch?

I found in the begining I had breast pain and nipple pain when Olivia first latched on, and I found out it was because of my latch.
Its your bodys way of letting you know you haven't done it correctly.

Check your babys mouth for white cottagey looking stuff, if your baby has it you could have thrush, but to be perfectly honest it does sound as though you havnen't got the correct latch.

A correct latch is very important to help aid your supply building and poor feeding can result in bloct ducts and then mastitis, even when these things happen there is still no reason for you not to continue feeding.

Please seek help from you health visitor and ask to see a lactation consultant.

I find it very sad that people are'nt supporting you, there is no reason for you not to continue, you are doing a fabulous job.

thanks for replys. checked her mouth it looks normal not white
i thought that about her latching on so midwife checked it and she said it was fine
does anyone think a breast pump would help just so when the pain is at its worst i could just drop one bottle in to ease the pain

empa. please do not be tempted in using a pump or giving formula or a bottle just now.

contact your midwife and explain to her how you are feeling and ask her to pop round and check you over. If she can't get to you for a while go to the doctor. If the pain you are getting is the start of mastitis you need to be medicated ASAP. Same with thrush.

I think your latch is ok even though i can't see you coz if it weren't your nipples would be painful and sore.

please contact your midiwfe and let her check you over. Its for the best it really is.

In the meantime you could try taking a warm back and soaking your breasts in the water or laying a hot flannel on them to see if this relieves any discomfort.

please keep me updated chick and keep up the good work.

Just wanted to offer some    empa
I really hope you continue and that you find support at home too

Hi'

Hope you findout whats causing it hun i know the beginningis quite painful i have had everything BF related  keep it up hun it does get better!!

I used to get pain on one boob which I think was a painful letdown, but it used to last for a bit longer than they said it should, probably a minute or so, but felt like longer. I found I was tensing up in anticipation of the pain, which no doubt made it worse. I did the deep breathing exercises from antenatal just before I put her on and through the first part of the feed, and that helped. A soak in the bath, lying on my front so boobs submerged also helped. It did get better though after a few weeks - everything just clicks into place.
Charlotte is now 14 weeks, and feeding her is the easiest thing in the world, and has been since she was about 6 weeks, so please don't give up - I now actually miss the frequency of the feeds - she is down to about 6 a day and I feel a bit superfluous. Try and find a local support group - mine was a godsend.

I found breastfeeding reall painful for the first few weeks, I would dread feeds. I was close to giving up but I was more determined to keep going, and I'm so glad I did, I love breastfeeding! You're doing a fantastic job, well done. Let us know how you get on.
