I took OPK’s this month and got my positive OPK 12 days ago in the evening. I’ve been counting ovulation since then but have just realised that i wouldn’t have been ovulating that day, because that’s peak LH surge. So really it would have been the next day or the day after... is that correct?

So I wouldn’t be 12DPO yet. Only 10DPO, maybe 11DPO?

Ovulation occurs about 12-36 hours after a positive OPK, just depending on your body really. So yes you wouldn't be 12DPO today, especially not if you had the positive OPK in the evening. You can really only confirm the exact time of ovulation by temping :)
