I have only had the thing a week and already it's going tits up!

Yesterday I bought the game Endless Ocean and tonight OH has gone out so I thought I'd have a dabble. Put the CD in as normal and I get a message that reads

An error has occurred. Press the eject button and remove the disc, then turn the Wii console off and refer to the operations manual."

So I do this about 20 times and still it won't work. I tried other CD's and they seem fine. There are no scratches or marks on the new CD... why is it doing this? I did a quick google and the results that came up didn't look too promising tbh..

anyone else this before???

If other games are working it's more likely to be the disc. Only time I've had that message is when I've put a CD in the Wii upside down  . So hopefully it's the disc that's not readable. Can you take it back?

I hope so. I'm gonna take it back tomorrow. I have the receipt but it does say that if you have broken the seal then they won't accept returns. But I had to break the seal to use the bloomin thing. I can see me shouting in the shop tomorrow if they start with all that nonsense!!!

I think if it's faulty they have to offer a replacement - even though these shops seem to think you'd make a copy and then come back to swap it for another of the same game  Good luck!

if its faulty they have to offer a replacment, OR a credit note for that store

ie they wont give money back to stop people buying games/cd copying then returning them

They should be ok if you only want a replacement of the same thing :)

Hope it gets sorted :) xx

if the CD doesn't work then they should take it back.. because they've sold you a faulty product which isn't right. you're never going to know if a CD works until you take it out and try!

hope they sort it out for you.

you can definitely get a replacement if it's faulty hun. It's your right - consumer protection and all that

DONT PANIC HUN!!! When i first got ours we got the same error message.... this has happened to millions of consoles. We couldnt get it to work for ages and i googled it and found a forum where loads of other people had the same error. DD's friend said she had the same problemas well. It must be a problem with the console itself when its brand new because after a couple of days ours stopped firing up the message and behaved itself and we have not had any problems since. It will bring this up if the disk is in the wrong way as well. Bear with it because if you take it back to the shop they will only tell you to send it off to Nintendo or they will and then you will have no console. Put another disk in and try that and then gradually introduce the other disk. I was all up for going mental when mine did it but its absolutely fine now... just played up for a couple of days. Try to refrain from kicking it if you can help it while it "settles into its new home" :rotfl: If all else fails switch it off, take all the cables out one by one and replace them and switch it back on, this is what i did. Let me know how you get on and if you still have problems ill try and find the forum i read. Good luck

It wasnt a problem with the game we had as it worked perfectly after a couple of days. Also, it happened with other discs as well. A friend of DD's had this with a completely different game and hers corrected itself after a few tries. I just think they are over sensitive for the first few attempts. Probably a bit like DVD players, some play any old scratched disk and others wont even think about playing anything with a hair line scratch on them! Its all to do with the laser that reads the disk.

Like i said we had this error for about 30 attempts at playing ANY game but then after that we just put it in and it played perfectly and we have never had any problems since. We have had the wii for a year now!

My advice would be to just keep trying it and im pretty sure it will start to co-operate

UPDATE
Thanks everyone for your help. I took the game back to the shop today and they refused to give me my money back because the seal had been broken. After trying to explain reasonably that the game was faulty I totally lost my rag with the manager in a packed shop.

They said that all I could have was a replacement which was fine with me but they didn't have one in stock. It was at this point that I demanded my money back only to be told that "because you have broken the seal we can only give you a credit note" I appreciate that any Tom, Dick or Harry could buy a game, copy it and return the game but this wasn't the case at all. I told him to put it in a machine to prove that it wouldn't work. They didn't have a Wii to try it on. Anyway he gave me some crap about running it through their disc cleaning machine and that should clear up any scratches (of which there weren't any cos the game had only been out of it's box once!) So I brought the "cleaned" game home and it still won't work so tomorrow I'll be going back to the shop and I will seriously kick off if I don't get my cash back..

sorry it's so long!!!

I still dont think it is the game hun, i tried 2 in ours (we only had 2 at this point as it was new) and none of them worked. It was wii sports and wii play we tried. Another member has had this with wii monopoly which is another different game. Its a shame you cant try another game just so you know where the problem lies by process of elimination. Ill google to see if i can get some quick fix for you.

Sorry... I thought I had put that I have tried other games and they work fine in the console. It's just this one game that refuses to work.

Hi hun, ok ive been reading the forums and my god there are a million and one errors coming up on these wii's!!!

I just have to ask:-

1. Did you buy the wii console from the UK?
2. Are you using a region 2 game?
3. inserting the disk correctly?
4. Has the wii been dropped at any time as the disk reader might have moved out of sync if it has

I only ask as its really easy to insert the disk in the wrong way. If your wii is lying down you should insert the disk with the label upwards. If the wii is standing up then you have to insert the disk with the label facing to the right.

Check the disk is clean and free from scratches (im sure you have done this)

It seems there is no set pattern to how these wii's work/dont work. Some people have had problems which have then resolved themselves and others still remain not being able to read all 10 of their games etc.

If you have done all of the above, it looks like there is a problem with the laser. I know there are problems with Mario Kart on many peoples wii's. Apparently 4 out of 10 wii's come up with disk errors, i guess ours was one of them.

Nintendo are aware that they have released hardware with problems and will fix it for you (i have sent things away to Ninty before and their customer service is truly excellent) I know its a pain in the rectum but if none of the above works its your only option. From what i can gather there is very little chance that the game is faulty although its obviously not impossible by any means. UNFORTUNATELY, Ninty work like SONY... if the console doesnt work then the shop will not refund you, you HAVE to call the company itself and send it off for repair. With SONY they got me to send the console off (PS2 with laser issues) to them and then they replaced it with a refurbished console (was not so happy about this :? ) which was in excellent condition and then a courier dropped it back off to my doorstep with it. They do fix them quite quick as well. Let me know how you get on
