Does anyone know whether this story about not being able to dye your hair when pregnant is true or not? I've looked online and have seen articles that say there is no substantial evidence to suggest that it can be harmful but i don't want to take any unnecessary risks.

P.S. By no means is this top of my worry list, it's just that i have a wedding to go to in a few weeks and would have liked to do my roots. No biggy if not lol x

I've been looking into it quite thoroughly. There is no proof that it affects the baby in any way. The only proven effect is that, due to hormonal changes, your usual dye might turn out a different shade.

There is no way I am going to be exhausted, sick, fat AND have half black and half blonde hair, LOL! This is where I draw the line.

I don't think there is any research to show that it is harmful to baby as yet (or to prove the other way either), but the main concern is actually that because of the change in hormones in your system you may have a different reaction to the dye than you would do if you were not pregnant, either in terms of the colour outcome or your scalp being more sensitive.

To be on the safe side I went to the hairdresser to get mine done while I was in tri 1. She did a patch test a couple of days beforehand to make sure there was no reaction, and the colour came out fine for me. Now I'm in tri 2 I'm back to doing it myself, especially now I know that I haven't had an adverse reaction. But everyone is different, so talk to your hairdresser about what might be best for you.

Hope that helps.

I've been going to hairdresser and getting my highlights and roots done as normal x

Hairdresser said it's totally fine, as the dye isn't actuallly touching your scalp anyway x

I trained as a hairdresser and it doesnt do any harm to the baby :) However the colour u choose (especially lighter colours) may not come out what u expect it too....sometimes blonde can go a grubby colour.
It best to wait until at least in ur 2nd tri to do it but even in ur first tri it wont do any harm. With my first i died my hair in tri 3 and all was fine :)

I've done mine whilst pregnant too. I'd just do a patch test first to make sure it comes out as the desired colour :) xx

I waited until I was 12 weeks (well actually 11wks 6 days as I could wait no longer!) Then made sure area was well ventilated, etc, and I used an ammonia free dye.

I've been getting mine done but def get a test, I normally have some blue streaks but they just won't take and wash straight out! The black seems to be fine still though but I always go for a skin test as my skin has become so sensitive. I also waited until tri 2 just incase plus I think the smell would have made me sick anyway!

It's fine as Long as you don't get it on your scalp I think x

Hi as everyone says, dont think its proven to be bad for baby its just abit unpredictable to if it will go the desired colour or if the colour would hold well. Ive been having highlights since day one, never gone a funny colour at all, have had a full head of colour the last couple of times but im finding the blonde isnt holding the well and is fading quicker. xx

Ive had mine done twice during pregnancy. First time was at 10 weeks pregnant and second time was at 18 weeks. I didnt realise after Id had it done the first time and then did a bit of research and also found that there wasnt any solid proof to suggest that it harms the baby.

I think i'll be doing mine from a box to be honest, i can't afford hairdressers prices! All this about not getting on your scalp seems a little impossible though! If you're doing something to your hair surely it will affect your scalp?! I guess maybe not so much with highlights/foil but with a full head colour it would definitely...

Still haven't seen any evidence of it being harmful so i imagine i'll give it a go, even if its just the once :) thanks guys xx

I spent ages researching this, my hair is naturally blonde but I use a lighter tone on it. Last I did it i was 12 weeks & read conflicting things but most generally says its ok, lots of websites say to use highlights as they dont go on the scalp. I used normal dye last time but didn't rub it into scalp, think i'll do the same this time.

:)

I think it's only bleach they really advise against hun!
XxX

When doing research the only thing I found was that there was more worry about the fumes and smells given off by the chemicals that could be inhaled so to make sure that the dyeing was done in a well ventilated area.

My hairdressers also made me sign a disclaimer before they agreed to dye my hair and obviously told me of the warning which I completely understand that they have to do.

I'm a hairdresser & so is my mum she has salons etc before I was born...I am naturally dark brown and whilst being pregnant I have had a head full of bleach highlights with toners then a light brown on top back to dark with bright red, my hair is still in tact infact I have that much of it my head hurts - I'm not actually joking but it's still very strong & healthy. My mum also did the same whilst she was pregnant with myself & my sister. I would recommend going to a salon though just because those box dyes arnt the best and have lots of different chemicals salon quality colours don't have in xx
