My mum noticed that Kenzo's poohs are more on the liquid side, I never paid attention to it as it's been like this since birth and because all he has is milk i thought they were meant to be liquid.

But anyway now i'm thinking he might have picked up a germ from one of his bottles or dummies that i didn't sterilise properly?

This is how i do it:
After sterilising the bottles I usually wait a few minutes then open the lid and take out all the bottles at once (usually 3), then start expressing with one of the bottles. The other two are still there, out of the steriliser (and maybe taking in germs? :? )

I'm thinking - should I leave the other 2 bottles inside the steriliser while I'm expressing? But when I open the lid, they are no longer sterile, are they? so i have to sterilise them again??? if that makes sense.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeease everyone, let me know how you do it. I'm confused and I don't want baby to get sick.

and by the way - how about the dummies? do you sterilise several times a day? or just once for the whole day. can you just rinse them?

I used to use a microwave steriliser for DD, I'd take out the bottle I'd need and leave the rest in there. And for DS I used a cold water steriliser and did the same thing.

If you're expressing then I guess he's still breastfed? If so then relax  , it's totally normal for their poos to be liquid. I remember one girl tried to make me think DD was seriously ill because of how liquid how poo was compared to her DSs formula poos!

Everything your doing is absolutely fine, so please stop worrying, babies poohs do vary from solidish to liquid. Its normal, they only really change when you start weaning.

sorry to go on and on about this, but did you sterilsie the rest a second time then? because apparantly once you open the lid, the stuff is not longer pretected. :? you see that's the confusing part.

My baby had her first solid poo yesterday (it was a proud moment) - she's exclusively breastfed and has just started on solids. Until then, all her poos were liquid, runny etc.

I'm not sure about the steralising, sorry.

I dont think you are doing anything wrong. Im not a bf but I had read that the poo is going to be runnier because they are being bf.

I dont think that the bottle being out the sterilser for a wee while is going to make him ill, dont worry.

I have dummy lids for our dummies so I sterilise the dummies once a day, or more if they are dropped or whatever and then put the lids on and leave them on the side ready to be used. If they aren't used that day I'll do them again the next day or when they next need to be used.

With bottles, I put the sterilised lids over the sterilised teats, then put it all on the bottle and leave it on the side. I'll also leave those for a day before re-sterilising if they haven't been used.

I don't know if that's right or not but that's just how we do it.

On occasions I have used a bottle that's been rinsed but not sterilised. Ryan was being angry for food and I just couldn't wait the 4 minutes. Needless to say he didn't get ill from it.

And to second the others, breastmilk poo is runnier than bottle poo.

I usually steam sterilize all my bottles in the morning and make up a couple of feeds then I put the empty bottles etc in a cold water sterilizer to keep them sterlie and just rinse them with boiling water when I need to use them.

I had the same problem, worrying whether the bottles were still sterile after I'd opened the sterilizer...so I just bought a big tub with a lid and some cold water sterilizer tablets and I just chuck what I'm not using in there so I know that they are nice and clean. It might not be necessary but it certainly makes me feel better!!

I usually do my dummies in the morning by putting them in the cold water sterilizer for half an hour then rinsing them in boiling water. I have lids for them too and if she drops one I'll usually boil the kettle and drop the dummy in for 5 mins to get rid of germs.

that sounds fine to me.

i do nay's bottles in cold water and i leave them out.

once they have been cleaned they are fine for the whole day,

and you don't have to sterilize kenzo's dummie 7 time

i have started to use the same technique for the dummies - 5 min in boiled water. but your technique for the bottles i think is a lot of work, but i'm glad it makes you feel better. i'm such a worrier i might even consider going through all that trouble just to feel better!!!

No I didn't :)

Hiya,

you're not doing anything wrong hun.

Bacteria take about 30 mins to multiply each time, so leaving a few bottles a few minutes is fine. When you take the lid off, they won't suddenly get infected.

I can honestly say Asher has never had a solid poo, and he's 4.5months now. It's completely normal for babies poos to be liquid, I'm surprised your mum has commented as if there is something wrong.

Plus, I can't speak for other mums, but the amount of stuff Asher puts in his mouth and the fact that he tries to drink his bathwater, I sometimes wonder why we sterilise anything at all!!!

Don't beat yourself up, sterilising is difficult at the best of times, don't make things more complicated for yourself.

I thought it was only Charlotte that tried to drink the bathwater!

FLIPPIN ECK!!!

Looks like I've been getting it totally wrong then for about 10 years, nannying and with my own! I just copied my first boss, and she is a doctor!

I sterilise things, then put them in an airtight container that has been cleaned with boiling water, and close the lid. I don't resterilise when I use stuff, and I've been doing that way for years with no ill effects.

I feel bad now.
