Hello,

Looking for some general advice - as the title says, I am obese and pregnant.

I am coming in at 226lbs (16st 2lbs), I used to be 258lbs (18st 6lbs) so have lost 2 stone and 4lbs (I had lost just over 3 stone but I ended up over eating during winter and christmas)

Although I am proud of my weight loss so far I know I am still not a "healthy" weight for having a baby. I am physically fit as I was running 5k several times a week up until a few weeks ago. I don't have cholesterol problems and my blood pressure has always been great much to the docs surprise.

I have not been to see the doctor about being pregnant yet - I know they are going to lecture me for being a obese.

I don't want to lose weight being pregnant, I want a healthy baby but my questions are -

Can I still do my 5k runs several times a week?

Is there any way I can reduce the pregnancy weight gain?
I don't want to put all that good work out the window by gaining back all those pounds, I felt miserable and depressed at that weight and I finally feel more confident at this weight even though I am still obese. Also it is my wedding 9 months after baby is due and I want to be in a size 18 dress at the most! Don't want to push it into the 20s and 22s again where I used to be.

I have been eating yoghurt and fruits for breakfast, having light lunches and trying to snack on health things like homous and carrots instead of binging on crisps and chocolate.

Also, will there be any chance I will have a nice looking bump? My weight is all carried round my stomach - its like wearing a tyre! I am worried no bump will be able to show and instead its just going to push the fat forward! Oh dear...bad mental images!!

Any advice on managing weight/reducing weight gain etc would be so helpful! xx

Hey Hun, I am overweight too and the doctor told me to try and not gain too much weight. Which I haven't, I lost 1st 7lbs in my first tri going from 16st 7lbs to 15st this was due to severe morning sickness though. I have some how managed to only ge to 16st 2lbs this week at nearly 36 weeks pregnant, so a small gain if u think about it. Not really sure how I have done it, but my appetite hasn't been great throughout the whole pregnancy and at times I have had to force myself to eat something.

As for ur exercise I think as long as u had it in ur routine before pregnancy u can keep it up. But ur not to start anything new. U might find that through ur pregnancy u will have to drop it down to walking rather than running, but only u can determine what u can still cope with.

I think if u can staying eating healthy then u should be able to control ur weight gain easily, as long as ur not following a proper diet as such, just healthy eating.

As for a bump I never thought I would get a nice bump either, but I have and people know I'm pregnant rather than thinking I'm just fat! I wear size 18 clothes normally and hold quite abit on weight around my belly too. Added a couple of pics to show u that u will get a bump, although I think mine took til around 25ish weeks to look like a bumptious everyone else rather than me looking fatter. Xxx

Thanks so much for that! It is such a worry and doctors can be so judgemental.

I will keep up the runs, because I enjoy being fit despite being over weight, but might reduce it just now because of the heat! Dont want to cook the little bean! Was sposed to be doing a 10k event yesterday but had to pull out as it is not something I do regularly and didnt want to risk it.

I really do hope I get an awesome bump like that, thanks for the pics! It is very reassuring! I am self concious enough about hiding my fat so dont just want it pushed out further!

Trying to eat healthy, but I am starving all the time so sometimes end up grabbing whatever is going. Need to work on that! x

Hey!

I used to run regularly and was a gym goer before I got pg but I swapped running for the cycling machine and brisk walks as my heart rate was too high due to all the changes in my body. I still go to the gym 4 times a week but one of the classes is aqua aerobics and babyfit.

Don't push yourself to hard if you stick to eating healthily if you can and keep regular low impact exercise you will have a lovely bump :) that said my first trimester I lived off rubbish thanks to morning sickness!

Good luck :)

Hey I'm a size 18/20 normally and weighed 104 kilos at my first MW appointment. last week I went for my 16 weeks MW appointment and had gone up to 106 kilos. So just a 4llbs weight gain. I've tried to be really careful with what I eat. I still have treats but made sure I've had breakfast and lots of fruit and changed to rice cakes instead of crisps and biscuits.

I never really did any exercise before I got pg, so haven't done too much since. I try and do more walking with OH when the weather is nicer, especially now I'm in Tri 2 and have more energy.

My SIL put on alot of weight during pregnancy, mainly because she literally ate for two people and all she ate was crap! I've managed to not put too much weight on, as I eat pretty much the same as I did before and try to go for healthy options when possible.
