Had my first look around a nursery today, its at the hospital it aimed for nhs staff but have spaces for non nhs worker too.

its very big its almost like a school. loads of different rooms. i went to the room Dior will be in.
its 3 children to 1 member of staff
there are 4 workers in the room and 12 children.

they change nappys 3 times a day but if they poo they will get changed.

all that put me of was i asked the girl showing me around who in the room is first aid trained, she said "ummm not sure  "
then when the lady incharge of Diors class walked by she said "im not sure well no one at the mineat but there is alwats some one in the building or around some where. but the tests are coming up soon"

what do you make of that??????
i was hoping for a lil small nursery (like in balamory, if you watch it)
where every one knows every one, but it was a massive school type place?

In most nurseries you get a daily report sheet with sleep times, nappy changes (time/wet/soiled) what she has eaten, how much of it she ate, what she has drunk and when. what she has played with, what creative and focus activities they have done that day etc.

Most of the children will eat the food sometimes they will leave veg etc but they tend to try more than they would at home because of the other children, if you know she dosnt like anything when she joins tell them she has food preferences and these will be given to the cook and they will not give her these foods they will give her something else.

in the 18 month section they do still have naps, naps are still done till preschool age unless you ask otherwise, naps will usually be done after lunch and end at about 2pm, you can tell them to give her a limit though, say you dont want her to sleep for more than 1 hour/2 hours etc you can tell them and they will wake her up after that time, we have quite alot of sleep limits in the nursery, but they tend to be in the older rooms like 2+.

When you join you should be given something to sign saying if she is allowed out of nursery or not so if you dont want her to, thats fine. But when we take the children out we just go for a walk to the pond and feed the ducks etc on the buisness park that the nursery is on and i think all the children are allowed. If they are taking her away from the premises however they must contact all the parents before hand, they cant just take the children out without asking unless its around the nursery area but then you still have to have signed the form saying she can go on little walks.

Unfortunatly you get bad staff in some places, when you do you're previsit and sit in the room with her talk to the staff try and get a jist of what sort of people they are and see if you feel happy with it, only you can tell that.

I know someone who worked at the hospital nursery before and it works just the same as normal nurseries so i cant see a problem see how you feel again when you visit and look around.

Remember its september and lots of children just left for school and so lots of children will have just moved up into the older rooms hence the spaces. We have loads of spaces at our nursery and we have over 100 children. Ask them how many children the nursery can hold, and how many children they actually have.

Hope this helps

your a star cassi... thanks.

what happens if the child wont nap Dior wont sleep any where other then her own cot, not ebe my sofa or my bed or at her nans she will just go the entire day with out a nap even though she is tired wil they still try and put her down? i no it would really upset Dior?

If you say you dont want her to sleep then she dosnt have to. But i find alot of parents come in and say exactly the same thing, but because all the children are lay down on sleep mats and a carer usually sits with the children and pats their back to get them off to sleep none of them really have a problem at all . I think the children do alot at nursery they wouldnt do at home because all the other children are doing it. But also because the carer sits and comforts them untill they are asleep. Maybe you could let them try and see how she goes?

unless you dont want her to sleep, then just tell them and then she wont have to :)

yeah would be fine if she wants to sleep but once i was getting ready in diors room and tryed to put her down in harleys cot she was having none of it????

but i no what you mean copiing other kids. we went toddler group and she ate mango, she has always through it away when i give her it but she was coping yhe other children

Alot of the parents come in and say, whoa there is no way you will get him to sleep in the day he screams blue murder at home but you can try, and usually it works, in fact we dont have any children that refuse to go to sleep that i know of there was one boy that would fuss a little but that was cause he was so grumpy cause he was exhausted , but quite a few of the children wont go to sleep for mom and dad at home on the weekends or if they are not in nursery lol!!..

Come to think of it loads of the parents come in some days and was like arghhh she is been a nightmare today, took 2 hours to get her dressed and in car this morning she was having none of it etc, good luck! but then they are angels for us :rotfl: And one girl who never used to get dressed for her parents at home and run them riot, well we never had a problem at nursery she always got dressed and behaved lovely!!
The parents are just like this :shakehead: when we tell them :rotfl:

I better stop laughing, that shall be me soon hehe

I don't think I would be happy if the staff didn't know who was first aid trained. I'd expect someone to know and there to be someone on hand all the time. Kids are always having accidents so I'd feel better knowing someone would look at them and say they were fine. If you have any doubts hun then I would seriously think about it further because you'd do nothing but worry if you weren't 100% about the nursery.

I agree with Strangeness - I wouldn't want Ella going to a nursery where there is noone trained in first aid :?

It says they do sessions though? so it may be one of them nurseries that you have to either book in morning then afternoon sessions meaning you have to get her for 30 mins for lunch or might just be for people that want to do the whole day, i know some nurseries that cant keep children for the whole day in 1 go and some parents need to come and be with them at lunch for insurance reasons. Id phone and ask.

They probably just put the session times up on the site in case people just wanted afternoon or am sessions though. Its unlikely that they dont take for the whole day :)

really??? i didnt no that?????

they just phoned me asked what i want.. i said 1 day a week
they said middle of next month we have a space for a friday.

im going there next tuesday?????

hope its not sessions :(

it sounds good :wall:

just phoned... they keep them for the whole day inc dinner :cheer:

i think its going to be pricy though

but you get what you pay for i suppose

Thats good :D was worth checking

How much is it? such a good idea to send children to nursery for 1-2 days a week, does so much for their social skills. Even if i become a SAHM i will let J go to nursery at least 1 day a week, they learn so much from the other children that they wouldnt learn at home.

But i think i am going to try and go back to college so will use the college nursery if i do :)

dont no the price it dont say on the internet i asked over the phone they said that will be discussed on tuesday.

but the girl on the phone was lovely.

i dont no what it was about the place i went to today... just some thing wasnt right i couldnt see Dior in there :?

i wasnt happy that the girl that showed me around only ever looked after babies so she knew nothing about Diors group.

I would say it was a good thing that she only looked after the babies cause it shows the nursery has consistency, you will always have a chance to find out more about diors age group when you do a previsit and sit in the room with her for a couple of hours or so to see how she gets on.

Its strange that the other nursery didnt have a set price??

did ask about the 4 members of staff that are in Diors class. if it will lways be them, she said well 2 of them are on hol at the mo and ones on sick but we do like it to change to get the child used to different people???? is that usually a bad thing then :?

and what is a key worker?

the nursery im going to next week they have keyworkers..

when i asked about the price she said "cant give that information out over the phone

choosing a nursery is hard work :wall:

They prob won't give it out over the phone in case it's another nursery wanting to compare prices

1 thing i noticed on the link you put up was that prices depend on address????? what that about???

Keyworkers are 1 member of staff will be asigned to Dior to keep a record book of her developments , put pictures she does etc.....

Keyworkers are a good thing

There should always be at least 1 person constant in Diors group but need to get to know others in case of holidays and sickness and such like

I wouldn't be over happy with the one who didn't know who the first aider was, in a nursery there should always be 2 or more trained in case 1 is off
