Hi. Just wondering if anybody has had a similar experience to me. Im on my 2nd pregnancy, had my first scan on Monday where i discovered i was 14 weeks (bit further on than i thought) and they said the NT on the baby was 3.4mm so sent me to a consultant. Went to see the consultant yesterday who didnt appear too worried but said it was there, but could be for various reasons. I have to go back when im 16 weeks for a further scan so see if its reduced and if not, have an amnio.
Im worried sick despite reading all sorts of things about it is probably nothing, plus i know a few people who got told they had abonormalities showing up and their babies were fine. Im being told the scans are so good now (compared to when i had my son 5 1/2 years ago) that sometimes they throw stuff up that isnt really there. Suppose all i want is some advice of anyone who has been in a similar situation!! Sorry for rambling! :o

Hi, try not to worry, my sister had a 1 in 8 downs risk at the bupa nt scan. She was referred to a consultant for a cvs and has had loads of scans to check the baby for heart defects and all sorts of other abnormalities. All the tests have been negative and they don't really know why the neck fluid was so high. I know it's hard but try not to worry they will test and scan the baby very thoroughly for all sorts of things now.

Take care

Alfie

Thanks for your reply! I know, im feeling on the whole positive, but theres always that part of you that thinks you might be that small percentage. The measurements and everything else she checked where all as they should be so i guess thats a good sign! Just wish I could enjoy the pregnancy and get all excited but i feel slightly cheated at the moment. Suppose all will be revealed in the next few weeks! Thanks again for your advice!

   :hug:Try not to worry too much I know it's an easy thing to say but no to do. If you ever feel low or need to get things off your chest just pop on here and the ladies are brilliant with advice and for cheering you up. They've helped me out so many times. Take Carex

my boyf's brother and his wife were told at their first scan their twins had higher then average fluid around their heads or necks (i'm not sure sorry) is that what u mean? they were told there was a 1 in 10 risk of downs syndrome and had to hav 2 amnio's (1 for each baby! ) and all was fine.
try not to worry, altho i kno it must be hard

Hi, a friend of mine had a similar experience to you, she had an amnio because of the nt test result. Everything was fine and she was told that sometimes it can be the way the baby is lying can make the measurement seem bigger/smaller than it actually is. Try not to worry, she has a perfectly healthy 4 yearold boy now but at the time she was worried sick. Sometimes these tests just stress us out rather than offer reassurance! Take care

Thanks to you all for your advice. Yes, ive been told its an increased NT (fluid round neck). Im not worrying too much at the moment, just trying to take one thing at a time. This forum has been a godsend and its nice to know other people have been in my situation and everything hasbeen ok. Im due to go back to the Consultant on 29 May so I will be back on to let you all know how i get on! Thanks again everybody....

Sorry but all these terms are confusing to me. Anyhow, first pregnancy and at my 12week scan, I was also told I was 14 weeks, baby is fine though.

It's like a 1 in 40,000 chance a woman under 50yrs old will give birth to a baby with downs. If it doens't run in your family and you are young, no worries, even though it's not passed down through the family.

Good luck though, don't stress too much, something tells me your baby is fine (is it a boy by any chance).

I dont yet know what sex the baby is, i can find out when (or if) i have the anmio, but i do have a strong feeling (plus looking at the scan photo) that it is another boy...are you psychic by any chance Josephine Beth??!!

Im trying not to stress and i know the odds are pretty low but i guess i cant help it! Thats a women plus raging hormone thing i guess!!! :)

hi scousegit.......Well as you have probably guessed by the replies that the risks are low......Now i am 37 and have 8 kids.#9 on its way and because of my age they have me a high risk pg.....I have 8 healthy kids and have never had any tests....I always say that i will love a child whether it was born with downs or not, but i never put any stress on the pg by all these tests that do nothing but worry the parents..You will have a healthy bouncing baby with no health problems....You enjoy your pg and please dont let the odds affect you........Good luck ...

Thanks Mellowbird for your comments. I sometimes wonder whether it would be better without the scans, what will be will be i suppose. Im a positive person by nature so am staying so...will be going for my appointment on Tuesday 29th so will pop back onto the forum later on in the day to let you all know how i get on. Thanks again..this site has been a great help and will continue to be a help throughout and it wouldnt be such a help if it wasnt for you ladies! Thanks again

Great news scousegit  it's always a worry when you are told there's a higher than normal/ lower than normal something....... :?
Like mellowbird, I am 36 and was told I am at higher risk too.... I was told i would more than likely get a letter saying so with my blood results...BUT I got a letter saying LOW RISK and no further action required... so looks like we both got great news this week   :cheer:
