Zach is nearly 6 months and I started trying to introduce solids around 3weeks ago. He doesn't know what to do with the food in his mouth just sticks his tongue out. I don't think he is ready but my HV said I need to step up the solids asap, how can I do that if he won't eat them. Do I keep trying or wait a few weeks? Anyone else got a late starter food wise? X

I would just keep offering him little things around your dinner time. My friend started BLW at 6 months but she said it wasn't till he was around 7-8 months when he starting eating it properly...I wouldn't worry about the HV hun, he'll do it in his own time. xx

try different textures an flavours he may not like what your giving also every child different they dont all take to it quickly

yeah like yodabo said-try not to worry. Seems HV do not always know best. Lots of people say food is just for fun before one year and especially those doing pure blw approach the LOs don't get much down them for a while but are exploring the food flavours and textures. Good luck x

Agree with the other girls.

I remember older mothers kept going on at me to start weaning Grace very early but I knew she wasn't ready - she was ready at about 19 weeks, which was still early. At this stage it's not about what they are eating to trying and exploring different tastes and textures. They soon pick it up, they def don't eat much at all for a while. It is important that they are having enough formula or breast feeding well as this is mainly what they need in the first year. I changed Grace's formula at 6 months to the follow on milk to give her the added iron boost just in case she wasn't getting enough.

Thanks ladies, I'll keep offering him different things, don't feel too bad about it now. The HV always makes me worry! X

im trying to wean my lo now (hes almost 4 months) and he doesnt seem interested either he doesnt quite know what to do...im going to stick at it and hope he gets the hang of it, all his feeds in the night are killing me so im hoping he gets full up at bedtime with some rice!!!!

^^ at 4 months he is only just learning about everything, and doesn't have full control over his tongue etc. he is probably going through yet one of many growth spurts so should settle in the night (T became unsettled at night following his injections and is settling back into pattern now)

Zuzu: are you puree or BLW (sorry if missed another post) why not try the other method? :flower:

Mine isn't interested either. I'm honestly not bothered. I'm going to see if he can hold out till 6 months as i can do BLW weaning then. I've read up a lot about it and seems the right way to go. After giving my older boys pureed food i'm excited to wait and try 'proper' foods with Drake.

Ps..there's a misconception that giving solids early will help them sleep better at night but in actual fact it doesn't. Food is more for learning purposes at this young age and milk is their main source of food and should be still given every regulary. At 4 months 'some' babies go through a sleep regression where they tend to wake up more in the night, it doesn't happen to all babies but if yours seem to be one of them..hang in there. It does get better!

Think I'll look into baby led weaning, thanks again x

..there's so much conflicting information out there its hard sometimes to know what to do for the best! saying that, Marley has just woofed all his banana porridge at breakfast he loved it!!! =)
