So milk came in yesterday morning...baby has fed well and continued to pooh and wee...but since 9pm she has been so uncomfortable. She looks like she has wind. Legs kick in air and red face and generally looks like she is unhappy/struggling.

Could not put her down and we have basically been up all night with her ...i thought babies who bf didnt need winding...i dont lnow what to do..she is so uncomfortable.

Anyone else go through this when there milk came in...will it pass?
I dont know what to do?

Breastfed babies don't take in a much air as bottle fed, but still a good idea to wind them after a feed if they're still awake. Could also just be her digestive system adapting to the milk, might be wind at the other end. One thing to try is to raise the head end of the mattress slightly. Good luck, and hang in there! Big hugs

Also rubbing belly in a clockwise direction can help if there's wind in the intestines

Could be that now the milks come in she is having to learn how hard she needs to suck and maybe she is taking a bit too much air, particularly if you have a lot of milk? She will learn as she gets older and your supply will adapt if you continue to feed on demand. For now I would definitely wind her after feeding and also bicycle legs can help if the wind is lower down in their digestive system.

Of course babies usually have a sleepy period after birth for a few days and she is maybe waking up and starting to notice things like discomfort a bit more, it's normal for all babies to feel a bit of discomfort whilst their digestive systems are growing up to get used to milk, breastmilk is easier on their tummys though although will pass quicker so will need feeds little and often (when comparing to FF)

Hope she is a bit more settled soon, xxx

They don't take in as much air but I always winded my daughter after a feed. It could take upto 20 mins sometimes to get it up but if I didn't, she was uncomfortable, as you describe. Lying them on their backs and gently "cycling" the legs can help too.x

I always thought this too about BF babies. I always winded my first anyway but my second really struggled and I ended up using infacol for her. I'd never heard of a BF baby needing it before but since then quite a few friends have said they used it x

Ps also used gripe water with second DD which basically produced a projectile vomit with the wind about 20 seconds after swallowing. Grim.

Our LO started suffering badly with trapped wind when she was about a week old. If I'm honest I probably wasn't winding her consistently in the early days. We started using Infacol before each feed when she was Bout 2 weeks old and winding her more thoroughly. It didn't seem to help initially so from 4 weeks onwards we also started using gripe water as and when she seemed to be suffering and this seemed to help ease her pain. She's now 10 weeks and we still wind her but she brings the wind up much easier now and we rarely need the Infacol or gripe water. We also tried all sorts of positions for winding as well as tummy massage, cycling her legs and warm baths. It was horrible seeing her in discomfort but it does get easier as their digestion systems mature and in the meantime it's worth trying things to see what helps your little one best x
