New or second hand?

Right what do you ladies think- i have decided to buy a book for my Secret santa lady, looking on Amazon i can buy one new book for her or if i buy it 'like new' i can buy her two books. Im just thinking with books does it matter if they have been read before or should the present be brand new because otherwise its a bit cheeky. But everyone on here knows its a tight budget so what do you ladies think would you want one new book or two like new books?
I dont think im giving too much away because no one knows who my lady is it could be any of you! x
