New dog attack :(

When will people bloody learn, keep dogs away from children. Makes me so angry

My in-laws think it's fine to have Damien around their bouncy nutcase 3year old of a dog, I can't remember the exact breed, think its a cross German Shepherd with something else, but she is big and nuts. My in laws don't have Damien that often because I just don't trust them enough to keep her away from Damien. They just say she will be fine and that ignorance pisses me off.

I was mauled by a dog when I was 2 and I was terrified of dogs for years, I've only just got over the fear because I lived with Mark and his parents for a while. People need to wake up and get real about these animals. They are dangerous, no matter what breed.

Hi I would love to be a vetrinary nurse! Do you miss it? I think animals teach children so much, and I am really hoping that when I have a child it will grow up with my puppy and I will be able to teach it to treat animals with respect as you are doing with Ewan!

Yeh i miss the work and the animals and the banter with my work mates, working with animals is all i ever wanted to do and i will probably go back to it,
The pay is crappy and some places you get treated the same, but i had found a really good work place and had been there for 4yrs before i had ewan, i'm still in contact with every one there.
I don't miss the stress of getting up every day to go to work and the night duties and weekends and the late nights!
Vet nursing isnt the best for familys, but its the only job i can imagine myself doing!

What makes me mad is how some parents don't watch their kids around dogs. I have a German Shepherd and thankfully she is gentle around children but I have had my friend let her 2 year old daughter continue to smack her round the face! I had to point out that she should teach her not to do that because noone is going to be put up with that continually (my dog just escaped under the table!). Also lots of children come up to pet her which is fine but I think kids have to know not to approach strange dogs unsupervised. I will not leave my dog unsupervised around my baby and have been talking to trainers of German Shepherds on specialist forums to get breed specific advice.

People have to be made accountable for having vicious dogs!!!!

The owners should be investigated. and if appropriate banned from keeping dogs they cant control.

Seems to be mostly rotties that are getting the bad press at the moment in the national news which is sad. There was an article in my local paper tonight about an 8 year old boy savaged by a collie cross, now that didn't make it onto the main news. Guess the breed of dog doesn't have a scary enough face to flash across the news

I agree they are getting in the news because of the attacks, the latter one that was posted up was a backdated report from august that they have now, strangely decided to report..im sure tomorrow we will see a report of a rotty jumping up at there owner to give em a kiss but they will say "look look here is a pic we can use against rottys, just claim its mauling her!" every tiny little thing will get put in the papers now if it concerns a rotty attack..but mind you it will only be rotty attacks they mention...all the ones that wouldnt of been in the news hadnt the tragic accident last saturday happened.

i guess we should just think about the poor children that have been hurt and the family of the baby...poor people cause i think that both topics have been overtaken with 1 debate.

Them and jack russells are just as bad, I love dogs generally but I hate little snappy dogs especially Jacks (sorry to anyone who has one, no offence) I used to go on my paper round and this Jack used to jump up nearly over the fence and I would poo my pants and the owners were like ''its ok he cant get over it'' and one day he did and bit my leg, I cried and cried and an old man from over the road kicked it away from me and went mental at the owners. The old man reported them to the paper shop so I didnt have to deliver there again, him and his wife were about 90 and they gave me tea and choccie biccies, I gave them free papers after that instead of delivering to the derelict house I had it for he he he.

I agree though that dogs should NEVER be left alone arround children, we had a Boarder Collie and she was soft as hell and was scared of spiders even but when family/friends came to ours if they went to put the baby on the floor mum would always say ''can you just pick him/her up a minute while I close the dog in the back room'' just to be on the safe side!

My OH family have a rottie and he is the softest thing in the world to us cause he knows us, I punch him all the time (playfully ladies not in a cruel way) and he just start licking me or chewing my shoes! However if he is in the Garden and someone come in who he doesnt know he goes MAD

I feel so sorry for the families of the babies. I was lucky when my dog only grazed Reece's skin the other month, I realise now it could've been much much much worse!!

Before Reece's incident I used to say stuff like-"Oh Hartly's harmless, wouldn't harm a fly, course i can trust him with my baby " but ever since then I've never left them alone. I was stupid to think that because he's a lovely quiet retriever that he wouldn't have it in himself to snap at anyone

Same here.
It you stick your hand out and they shy away you can generally tell they are a bit nervous

Where were the parents when this happened? I would never leave a young baby with a dog no matter how much you trust them. These dogs that hurt the babies were guard dogs as well so knew they were dodgy! Poor kids can't believe something like this could be allowed to happen.

I have a staffordshire bull terrier, one of the dogs that are considered dangerous and he is so soft and silly it's unreal. I wouldn't leave Aaron with him because I know Aaron could push him too far and every dog can only take so much. They're on about banning these dogs for hurting children so what about collies, yorkies, jack russells? Any dog that has hurt or killed a kid! And what about Cat's that smother babies? How far can you go? I think pets and kids are fine as long as they are supervised correctly.

you know i don't think i've ever met a really nasty staffy or english bull terrier, they have all been as soft as they come just a bit mental! would lick you to death then jump all over you!

I've never owned a dog, but alway wanted one, we will get one but it will be when kids are old enough to understand about animals and respect.
we are thinking labrador, english springer spaniel, Huntaway.
I love GSD's and Flat coated retrievers but hubby doesn't - gsd is too big anyway!

talking about GSD's i knew a perfect example of a properly trained guard dog...my auntie and uncle had a GSD and also quite a big house so he was trained as a proper guard dog as well as pet and the way he was trained if there was an intruder he would growl and back them up into a corner and stay there untill police would come or if they tried to run he would pin them down but without harming them and never biting...this is how police dogs are trained too..its just a shame some people think they can train their dogs to be guard dogs but dont realise it takes more than you think!

I have a choccy lab and he is brilliant with children, But i would NEVER leave him alone with a child. as much as i love my dog i can't read his mind and therefor could never garuntee he would never snap. I have trained him to always be gentle around children, but i know it would break my heart if he ever did hurt a child even if it was an accident. And i never want to be put in the situation where if he did do that he would have to be put to sleep. So no matter how well he seems to get on with kids i will never leave him with children unsupervised. And i urged all parents please ask the dog owner if it is ok for there kids to stroke the dog, because the amount of kids i get running up to barney in the park is unbelievable especially with icecreams and biscuits in there hands. And remember not all dogs like to be crowded round and fussed, And sudden movements can startle them. Remember it's not all about the dogs temperament cause even the best behaved dogs can react unpredictably in new surroundings or stressful environments.
