LuLi is my last baby my sacred fifth and I was so anxious to meet my baby, but also really wanting the moment to last forever. The last weeks of pregnancy are so special, giving birth such a momentous experience I wanted to savour it eternally. On Valentines day I had been having more leaky show and my pelvic area felt very tender, so I knew my body was preparing Considering my other births and how I nearly always needed some natural assistance of some kind to get things going I took some castor oil. I had a massive clear out and it started to make me have contractions, that produced more show. So we decided to fill the birth pool just in case . Hours after the castor oil had done its work, I was still contracting mildly twice every few hours. I managed to sleep through them. The next day these mild pains continued . I went for a lovely walk in the woods and that produced some stronger pains shortly after arriving home. I continued this pattern all day. Before bed I took caulophyllum and cimicfuga homeopathic remedies. Later I tried Pulsatilla 200c to encourage the contractions to become more regular. That night I was awoken with a contraction I could not sleep through. I got up and bounced around on my birth ball for ½ an hour and decided I should just continue to rest, so I went back to bed. The pains were all around in my back and groin and increasing in intensity slowly whilst I tossed and turned trying to sleep. At some point I must have dozed off, at 4.10am I woke again to a pain I could not sleep through. The pains continued to come every 10mins . Slowing to every 25 mins but ever so gradually increasing in strength.
By 7am I decided to phone the midwife and let her know. She agreed with me that since this was my 5th baby, frequency of pains was unimportant, intensity was. She arrived at 8.30. Her name was Beth and I connected with her straight away. She was not only a midwife but a trained Doula which meant she was very radical in her approach to birth. She had also just done a year of midwifery in America delivering privately babies at home. I could not believe my luck.
I explained to her everything that had happened so far and so she examined me. I was 3 1/2cms dilated. We agreed to get things moving and do a good sweep and stretch. I would never normally agree to this , but I knew/wanted this labour to have a kick in the right direction . Whilst doing this she realised that the babies position could be better, so with great care and consideration to me and baby she skilfully moved the babies head down an inch and got her chin tucked in.
Afterwards she explained that she was the only midwife on call that day as several midwives were off sick. She had 25 home visits to do. Her boss rang and she told her she would have to find cover as she had a homebirth to deliver. Her boss asked her if shed have time to go and do a few visits local to where I live, I was fine with this so off she went reassuring me she was only down the road if I needed her. I was shocked to learn that if another lady were to go into labour that day and wanted a homebirth then she would have to go to hospital. I felt so grateful.
Paris and I decided to go for a walk in the woods. It was such a beautiful day snow drops in flower .It seemed surreal that later that day I would be holding my baby. We walked for a couple of miles and by the time we returned home, the contractions were coming regularly. Beth returned at 12.00 I was a stretchy 4cm when she examined me. She offered to do another sweep but she felt my body tense and then said no she wouldnt as my body was in gear and getting on with labour. I was relieved she knew this intuitively and my trust in her grew.
At 1pm I got in the pool as the pain had increased. I could no longer chat through each contraction. I used the control I had over my breath and rocking in a frog like position in the water to get me through each pain. Paris was fantastic kneading my sacrum when I started to contract. He was right next to me giving me head and neck massages as I let the power of the water allow me to open to birthing my baby. Kate my friend was busy making sure tea was made whilst quietly observing. Tara the other birth attendant (their to support the midwife) had also had a homebirth and was commencing her midwifery training in September, again I felt blessed to have such beautiful women around me to accompany me on my journey.
I breathed and visualised a flower opening, my baby descending and cuddling my baby to my breast, during the quiet times between my contractions. They were coming every few minutes by now and some were monstrous waves of pain . I breathed and allowed them to wash over me, through me, out of me opening the way in their wake. Sometimes the next one would be much quieter giving me time to reflect. By 3.25pm the big tidal wave contractions were thick and fast, I used the gas and air to help me stay relaxed through. The effect of the gas and air gave me powerful visualisations that helped move the baby down. I realised suddenly that the babies head was pressing on that familiar place and the urge to push was gently washing over me. I felt a pop and knew my waters had gone. It was at this point that the Doppler broke it turned out not to be waterproof !!! I was not concerned in the slightest . Beth was not concerned either but wanted to air on the side of caution and for me to birth as soon as possible. With the next contraction I suddenly felt as though I was suffocating and was very uncomfortable with being in the water. I wanted out. I waited for the next contraction and let Beth examine me whilst I waited. I was 9cm and stretchy. After the next contraction my instinct told me to get out of the pool it was 4.00pm. I felt really disorientated on dry land and confused. I found myself on all fours upper body buried into the couch. Beth came to talk to me. She said that she knew I wasnt quite feeling that uncontrollable urge to push but she wanted me to deliver the baby now as she felt it the safest option. I agreed my instinct strong. I began to push with the next contraction. Beth talked me through it , I breathed lots and panted and pushed hard at times, but the whole thing felt strangely very gentle relaxed and natural the head was born with ease. . The cord was around her neck (I know this now , not at the time). With the next push my little girl was born. She was wrapped up in the cord and she had done a poo inside me. Thank the power of creation that my waters had broken, thank her again for helping me deliver my baby safely into the world. My little goddess had arrived. She tried to breathe but struggled, no panic flooded me the midwife rubbing her as I showered her in kisses , I heard Beth say ask her to breathe so I did and instantly she began to cry ..we have it on video that moment is so special. It was my most gentle birth .reading through my notes Beth wrote at 12.15 under pain relief, coping strategy Breathing, Paris, music how simple , how true. She was born to that sacred song I love to sing .by sheer coincidence of course , The Blacksmith sung by the enchantress herself Shelia Chandra, that brought tears to Pariss eyes his little goddess born to her mothers song in gentle love.
Peace be
