somebody i work with has a 7 year old lil boy his father is on the birth certificate but has not seen the kid since he was about 6 weeks old well anway this lady was wondering if there is anyway she could give her son a middle name ?? as her ex didnt want baby to have one but she really would like him to have one

wots that??? she is as clued up on this stuff as i am and that is not very much

we did this with kieran. you go to a solicitors (we didnt have to pay as our earnings were below a specific limit, which i cant remember) and they change it legally with a deed. i dont know about just adding it on the birth certificate. when we changed kieran's surname we were told that if the biological sperm wanted to contest it he could, but seeing as he isnt on birth certificate and he doesnt even know kierans original surname then there is no way that he could.

get your mate to a solicitor, best advice.

ohrite kool its only a middle name she wants tho seems like a lot of hasslle lol

cant you just put a middle name in anyway. might be worth checking at town hall where she registered her son. they should be able to tell.

I changed my name by deed pole a few years ago, and all i did was phone up the registrars office and ask for a change of name form, filled it in sent it along with cheque and there you go, name changed!

i think that it is different changing a child's to changing your own. it has to all be done through solicitors, and if the father is on birth certificate it all gets complex.

I changed DD's by deed poll. Her father is named on her birth cert but as he had had no contact in 2 years they said it didnt matter but advised to ask him anyway (I didnt) Very straight forward and costs about 45 quid

When I was 15 my mam applied to get my name changed by deed pole (change the spelling of my first name, totally change my middle names, and totally change my last name). I hadn't seen my dad since I was 11, but he still sent a bit of maintenance for me, and birthday cards, and I got the occasional phone call (VERY occasional).
Anyway, they said that he could contest it if he didn't want me to change it as I was under 18.....
so they wrote to him, and he wrote back saying that he strongly contested it.
But my mam argued the point that I was being bullied at school because of my surname, so anyway it went to court but my dad didn't show up...however he sent another letter to be read out in court stating reasons why he didn't want me to have it changed (I wasn't there so I dunno what it said, my mam went on my behalf).

AAAnyway, the judge ended up letting me change my surname (on account of the bullying, and also the fact that my dad hadn't bothered turning up) but didn't allow me to change any of my other names.

I'm really glad my other names weren't changed now - at the time I was only getting them changed because my mam was into numerology-type-thing and was convinced that my name was unlucky because the numbers in it didn't add up (some rubbish like that  )
I have a good relationship with my dad now....we started seeing each other again when I was 17 and I now see him roughly every 2 weeks. I wish my surname hadn't been changed aswell but it doesn't really matter now as I have DH's surname.
