Need your help ladies, we're struggling with how to spell bump's name.

Malachie John Gallagher
Malachie Gallagher

Malachy John Gallagher
Malachy Gallagher

Which do you prefer?

I'd probably go with the Y, maybe because that's what I'm more used to. Great Irish name x

Malachy here too although I've seen it spent Malachai, Malakai as well xx

Lovely name, I really like the other option too: Malakai x

Thanks ladies. We're saying it as Malak-ee, not kai so don't want to change the spelling too much but thank you for the suggestions :) I prefer with a y as it's more traditional but hubby prefers with an ie. Frustrating!

Tell hubby there's no such thing as Malachie!! It's either Malachy or Malachi. The one with the Y is the traditional Irish spelling, the one with the I is the biblical spelling. I definitely prefer yours!! xx

I've said about it being traditional but he wants to make it a bit different. I've told him that it doesn't matter, very few little boys in both England and back home are called Malachy now so it'll be unusual anyway! We've been really struggling with names, we'll eventually move home and don't want either boy to have super popular names like John, Patrick, etc. I'm working on him, subtly!

He will spend his whole life having to spell out his "quirky" version if you go with something "a bit different" - I know there are some names with different spellings, but I think making up an alternative version for the sake of it will just be annoying whenever he fills in a form or whatever. I like the name Malachy. It's not so different people haven't heard of it but it's different enough that there won't be 3 others in his class (or even his school!) xxx

I am a teacher and we have just one Malachi in our school, it's a lovely unusual name. I definitely prefer Malachy to Malachie though, tell hubs everyone is on your side haha

He finally agrees with me! Woooop, thanks ladies! We have decided to change the middle name to Seán so he's still having it after my Granddad but it's the Irish version instead. Plus, I think it flows better and I've always wanted to call my son Seán :)

Thank you :) it was you lovely lot that tipped the scale :D
