Do you think that's normal?

I went to the emergency department when I was 8 weeks, worried about an unbearable pain in my stomach, and asked for a scan. She said "no chance, even if you're bleeding we can't just do a scan. We'll probably send you home and tell you to rest as you're probably having a miscarriage."

how unconsiderate is that????? I'm hoping I won't experience any bleeding but what will I do if it does happen???? :x

That pain was nothing major and I'm now 11 weeks - everything is going great, I've heard the heartbeat with the doppler so I'm reassured. But can I really count on my hospital????? (It's the Whittington hospital in North london, by the way)

Hi Honey.

I think that is terrible that your hospital doesn't do emergency scans.

I thought that my hospitals pregnancy care was bad, but they seem to have been really good with me as I have already had 2 emergency scans.

I have my 12 weeks scan on Monday, and then if I want any more I will have to go private.

Sorry I can't offer any advice other than, can you go to another hospital? or get a private scan if you can afford it. Take Care xxx

well that's the thing, i've already had one private scan at 7 weeks, cuz im a real worrier. it was expensive though worth it, but i can't keep having private scan all the time. my hospital should provide, in case of emergency at least. ur right, i should change and go to another one, especially since ive moved to east london and this north london hospital is way too far for us. my 12 week scan in next tuesday. after that i might start making arrangements to be transferred.

Hi

I can't believe that! Thats the hospiatl my OH wanted me to use - no chance!

I'm going to North Moiddlesex, although I don't think they are any better i'm sure they can't be that bad.

I don't know where you are exactly but a friend of mine was at Whipps Cross and she said it was good, also I don't think Homerton is that bad.

I would definately find a new hospital.

Hope all goes well

The thing is though that in early pregnancy they still can't really do anything to help prevent most miscarriages, so it is more economical for them not to do the scans. And I've been in the position of losing a baby and watched it on a scan  It wasn't nice

You are right though Laetitia hospital, especially A + E staff can be very tactless about a whole range of problems. I don't know why.

Glad you and the baby are doing brill now Laetitia :cheer: and you are right maybe enquire about a hospital nearer you, best wishes :)

I think I'd go to a different hospital (London has thousands) and even though it wouldn't be my designated hospital I'd say I was at a friends or there overnight etc and had these pains/bleeding etc, and get a scan done there instead. It's a shame the NHS is so bogged down, so tight on money etc you can't get propper care without going private but that costs a fortune. Your GP can insist on you having a scan if it's needed and they can't say bleeding = miscarriage, sometimes it's other things and you'd have to have a scan at some point to ultra confirm that (espeically if you needed a D&C to remove a sac that wasn't budging on it's own type thing). Some places are just stupid over things like that.

That sounds terrible, could you move hospitals hun or perhaps let them know that you are not happy with the fact that if you bleed you will not get a scan? x

I would ask o move hospitals - I was born in St Thomas's and mum said they were great and there isn't anything wrong with me ( well thats what i like to think!)

Unfortunatley its a case of postcode lottery as to what you are entitled to. Down here we get a 12 week and a 20 week and if any bleeding we get emergency scan. (i know from my sister-in-laws pregnancy). My friend also had a complicated pregnancy and she had a scan a week from 25 weeks so looks like we have a good deal down here.

I would talk to your midwife about yur concerns and im sure they can't refuse to give you a scan but hopefully if they don't have the equipment they might suggest you go to a different hospital.

Hope your worries fae very soon adn you enjoy the rest of your pregnancy

Ye i think tots is right it is a postcode lottery. It is possible to move hospitals though as I have done it and found the care in the new hospital im at is much much better.

Dont let them tell you that you have to go to a certain hospital because its not true, you have the right to choose. I spoke to my GP and he arrange the referal to the new hospital so it may be an idea to speak to your GP?

We were one of the first to use the Early Pregnancy Unit in June 2005 at our local hospital Leighton Hospital to confirm a complete miscarriage, then I fell pregnant again straight after and had a scan at 7 weeks at EPU again to confirm all was okay to put our minds at rest...the woman who took us through everything second time round was the same who confirmed the miscarriage and she was really pleased to see us!!!
I think we are lucky here in South Cheshire

They dont at macc hospital either, i wnt in tues and had to wait till bloody friday for a scan was furious and wrote a long long letter to the people concerned!

Thats awful, i dont know what to suggest if any thing did happen..

i had bleeding throughout my early and 1st tri and had 3 scans done before i was 12 weeks pregnant.

I was only a month gone, then had to have scans then, and at 7 weeks to check i was pregnant.
The waiting was awful, and i recoomend to anyne if your not happy with your treatment then kick off
