Hi ladies

I'm currently in the florida keys. I'm out here because my husband is attending a conference and I didn't want to stay at home alone. Problem is a think I made a terrible mistake and wasted our hard earned savings.

I didn't anticipate that it would be so humid out here, I was told this was a good time to go as it was a bit cooler. LO is clearly hating the temperature so I'm trapped in the hotel room at least between 10 and 2 when the sun is at its hottest. I'm chasing the shade up till ten around the pool and then darting back inside the room. I chanced having an early lunch today at the pool bar, under cover with fans going. However, LO is clearly still too hot as wen I got back to the room he started crying and won't let me put him down.

The hotel is out of the centre of town so the only thing to do is sit around the pool, which causes above problem. There is also no where to eat nearby apart from the hotel itself which is stupidly expensive. The hotel does offer a shuttle bus into town but as we have no car seat I feel like I'm risking his life everything I get on it. Am I over reacting about that?

I want to go home 😔 but OH will have to stay. So I'd have to do the trip on my own and God only knows how much it will cost me to change my flights. I'm just saw in the hotel room on my on using the WiFi and I'm just miserable.

What would you do or any words of advice?

Sorry to hear you're having a rubbish time. Don't think you're overreacting too much, and I'm sure it's tough to enjoy it when baby is not comfortable.

Why would you need a car seat for the shuttle bus? Is it a legal requirement out there? If you're concerned about taking the baby on the bus, just explain to the driver that you're anxious, and ask him/her to drive super carefully. That's what I'd do.

I kinda get where you are coming from as travel a lot in my job and have had times where I'm on my own stuck in places I don't want to be. Are there any malls in the area ? In America they don't always tend to be in the main towns, I remember once there was a huge one off a freeway within walking distance of hotel. Or can you hire a car yourself? If you are able to? I'm pretty sure you can hire car seats with them, or as BIGBEE says speak to the shuttle bus driver. How long are you out there for? X

It's not a legal requirement for a car seat on the shuttle bus, I'm just worrying that I'm taking an unesassary risk. They drive at low speeds here but He's got absolutely no protection. He's only ten weeks old I worry bout his little neck.

I'm a nervous driver so no car hire for me!

There are what I would call retail parks near by, with kmart, publix etc. We walked up to them on first day to get some supplies. Even under the uv cover LO roasted. He cried for 2 hours solid after that and I think he got a little heat exhaustion because he had dihorrea that day.

It just seems this is no place for a baby!

Hi sorry to hear you are having a rough time. I know from experience how horrible to be stuck abroad in a hot country with a small baby. How many days have you been there? Lo will get used to temperature in a few days. Could you buy a fan for your room or a hand held one to take nxt to pool with you? Best bet is to try to make the most of it and stop thinking about being at home I found that made the days even longer. Is there anywhere to go in the evenings whilst it's cooler to get you out a bit?

It's horrible being away from home and hating where you are.

My advice is to try and wake up tomorrow with a fresh perspective, you're there so you may as well make the most of it.

Why not start your Xmas shopping? Are there shopping outlets so you can buy LO some cheap designer stuff (always makes me feel better!).

My biggest piece of advice is to join a group on Facebook called "its Orlando time" I know that's not where you are but if you make a post there, they have loads of tips on keeping babies cool and where to buy / hire car seats. Also I'm sure you can use a taxi? They have uber taxi there x

Thanks for your responses ladies. I'm feeling much brighter today. We went to watch the sunset last night and then had a nice meal at the hotel. Feel like I've had a little bit of a proper holiday!

LO still seems to be struggling with the temperature changes but eventually I can get him settled and he gets back to his happy self.

I kno this holiday will be what I make of it, I didn't expect it to be like b4 just Didn't realise it would be so hard!

Strange question but have you used nose spray on the flight? , I flew with my little one since he was a couple months old and only recently figured out that using nose spray, the saline stuff clears their nose and ears and that seems to help for flying.. Last time when I still didn't know, we got off the flight he starts draining bottles, throwing up and just isn't himself.. Before I felt like taking him to the docs, I checked with a boots type of shop and they recommended me to do this.. My last time flying was so different with him, he was happy willing to play and eating normal foods that he was supposed to, didn't drain bottles and didn't get ill.. He does get a heat rash but without the earache he had on the previous visit in June when he still got ill off the flight it became manageable after figuring out nose spray was my saviour!

At a younger age perhaps just drinking on the plane could've helped so it might be worth checking with a local pharmacy and perhaps ask if they can give you advise what to do to help manage the heat, so you can still enjoy your holidays!

I did JD, and he was wonderful on both flights! I got that tip from you so thank you.

Apparently, it's uncharacteristically hot here for this time of year but the humidity has started to drop now so he's coping better. I'm just staying in doors during high sun, which is no bother really as I wouldn't take him to town on my own and Oh is in the conference anyway!

The humidity in Florida is horrible. I have been in September and July. Both just as bad tbh I couldnt tell the difference.

It is a hard one because its even humid at night!

Perhaps your hotel may know of some things you can do with baby - that doesn't involve the sun. There must be a place where the babies who are born there go

Indoors with aircon is your best bet. Sorry your having such a time of it!

xxxxxxxx

Glad to hear the humidity started to drop! Have you got access to catch up tv or a computer/laptop that you can watch something on? If so, go to CW (it's an US channel) and look for Jane the virgin, it started last year on channel 4 and it's brill. I love it! Hope you can make the most of it when you do get the chance to venture out and get to enjoy the rest of your hols!
