My five week old is only taking an oz every hour. She cries for it then clamps her mouth shut when done or falls asleep. I can't wake her, have tried tickling, changing nappy, talking, changing position etc but no luck.....
I changed her to comfort milk two weeks ago as she was struggling with constipation. She was constantly pulling knees up and only producing a small hard poo as big as my little finger nail. This has stopped now and she's more regular.
But I'm thinking of trying first milk again as she was drinking 3/4oz of this. The comfort milk is thick so I'm worried she's falling asleep with her effort of sucking, we are using a bigger teat but it still clogs. Maybe it was just a phase and she'd be better now and up her milk intake? Or then maybe the constipation will come back? I don't know, I'm exhausted and my first baby settled on comfort milk and went three/four hours between feeds.....?

Any thoughts? X

Have you had her checked for tongue tie or lip tie? It's something that's often missed even by professionals and can really affect their ability to suck. A friend of mine has had two boys where both of them had a tongue tie and no midwife or HV spotted it but she did and took them private to have it confirmed and cut. My little boy has a lip tie that no one (including me) noticed until he was a year old and it totally explains why I had so much trouble. He was breast fed but fed every hour and a half for about 5 minutes and got a lot down him but then had such terrible reflux that I spent all day covered in sick for the first 6 months. And he refused all bottles. Turns out bottle refusal, frequent feeding and reflux are all symptoms of a lip tie. The bottle refusal only happens in certain degrees of lip tie so it could still be possible for your little one to have it.

Both my children switched to formula at 8/9 months and with my second I had him on hungry baby formula after a while and that made him constipated - is comfort milk similar to hungry baby? X

Hi Rose - yes, she's been checked and all ok. From two weeks to four weeks she was taking more in, this one oz thing is new x

Never heard of lip tie my son had all those symptoms how would I know about a lip tie? My daughter has a slight tongue tie but hospital said it shouldn't affect her. I take it it's either lip or tongue not both.
