Seems like the treasure basket post got quite a good reaction from people, so thought it'd be good to put a couple of other suggestions for you all too....
Edible paint.... (in case you are worried about LO putting hands in mouth). Use instant custard with a dash of food colour. Or different flavours of instant Jell-O. Tools for spreading can include hands, sponge, big chuncky paint brushes, flannels or other bits of cloth.
If warm enough, let LO do this in nothing but a nappy - easier to clean up afterwards
Also you can make an edible play dough. 2 parts oatmeal to 1 part each of water and flour. Again a drop of food colour if you want different shades.
