Maisie Doris Hopson born 3.54 2 / 12 / 13 6lb 7oz

As some of you know my labour started at 2am on Thursday 28th December with horrendous sickness and diarrhoea followed by random contractions, ranging from 7 to 20 minutes apart. That day I had an appointment with the midwife at 12 who examined me and gave me a sweep and I was just under 1cm dilated and in the early stages of labour. She booked me in for another sweep on Monday but she said "I really don't think you'll need it". My contractions carried on erratically until Friday evening where they stopped completely.

Sunday morning I woke up around 8am with contractions 7-8 mins apart. These contractions did feel different, a bit more business like! They carried on all day much to my surprise and by early evening I was starting to think this was it. I called the birthing centre at around 7pm and told them they had got down to around 5 minutes apart and was told to go in to be examined.

2cm. I was gutted! We left the birth centre around 9.30 and went for a little drive, husband had a KFC (as you do!) I said in the car about 5 minutes from home; "I wonder if my waters will go on their own..." 10.30 I got out of the car outside the house and felt wet.. husband laughed thinking and was joking and then WHOOSH! I was soaked! I sat on the toilet still gushing and rang the birth centre. They told me if I was ok to take my time, have a bath and go back in at 12.30. I took two paracetamol and got husband to time contractions while in the bath and when they hit every two minutes a few times in a row I started to think it was time to go back in, at 11.45 I rang the birthing centre back and said I can't wait, I'm on my way!

Got examined again, 4cm. I was feeling a bit deflated at that point, I thought after 4 days of slow labour that this part would be a bit quicker! I started on the gas and air and didn't really like it at first, oh that would change! I was surprised how quickly things were changing and my contractions got so strong so quickly. I don't really know what I was expecting but it wasn't that. They ran the water for the pool for me and I remember asking a few times if I could get in yet, it took ages to fill! When I got in I realised why, it was massive haha. It was so nice to get in the water, made a huge difference to me. I was swooshing about in the water for a while and I remember saying "I can't do this" a few times which I knew was ridiculous but I couldn't help it. The midwife told me she'd "do it for me if she could" and I said "no you wouldn't!" And her and husband giggling. I felt really warm in the pool but I didn't want to get out so the midwife put a cold flannel on my head while husband sprayed me with cooling mist. I remember them laughing again when I said "can you please not spray it in my mouth, it tastes like air freshener!" I carried on with the "I can't do this" type remarks and I asked the midwife if I could have anything else for the pain and she said there was no point as by the time it would take effect the baby would be there and she kept telling me I wouldn't be long. It wasn't long after she said that that I was pushing in the pool. I have no idea what time it was but my temperature went up and I had to get out of the pool because it would start to effect baby's heart rate so I went on all fours on the bed and said I really didn't want to be on my back. I pushed on and off for a bit longer and the midwife monitored baby's heart rate. I could hear myself (even in my labour haze) that something just wasn't right and the midwife turned me to lie on my back. Doh!

Here it all got a little bit scary and a bit of a blur. I remember feeling like I was pushing and nothing was happening and the midwife saying that baby was struggling and they were bringing in the resuscitation stuff. She asked me if it was ok to cut me and at that point I didn't care so she did an episiotomy. All I remember then is her saying "baby needs to come out now or we'll be having an ambulance to the hospital" and in two massive pushes she was out.

When her head was out the midwife says "this one has to be a boy after all this fuss!" And I said "definitely a boy!" How wrong we were! I couldn't believe she was a girl and how absolutely tiny she was! I kept saying "how couldn't I get her out?!"

She latched on within 40 minutes of being born and fed for an hour. I've got one continuous stitch inside and a teeny one on the outside and managed it all on two paracetamol and gas and air :)

Sorry it's a bit long! Thank you for reading xxxxxx
