Hey, so I'm almost 29 weeks pregnant. A midwife rang me earlier and said my blood results had come back with low hemoglobin and she'd arranged a prescription for me. She said they'd gone from 152 to 101 or something. What does that mean? Is it just low iron??

Yeah pretty much. You can get some side effects from iron tablets such as constipation, so try to eat iron-rich foods if you can - meat (esp red meat), seafood, green leafy veg, beans, dried fruit (raisins, apricots), iron-fortified cereals such as weetabix, cheerios, readybrek (google it for more ideas on that one, they're just the ones that popped into my head) and also things like brown bread and pasta. Also dark chocolate too apparently.

You need to make sure you're getting plenty of vitamin c too because that helps you to absorb iron. So if you do take tables, make sure you take them with a glass of orange juice. Think about getting vitamin c into your diet too if you're trying to help boost your iron levels through diet.

Not saying you shouldn't take the tablets, just that if you get any unfavourable side effects that there are other ways you can deal with it! My levels weren't too bad (but they were borderline) and changing my diet really did work. Xx

Ah thanks! I had just finished a looong day at work and was on the edge of dozing off when she rang so I didn't ask any questions! I was on iron tablets in my last pregnancy and had issues with low iron for a number of years so I was quite good at incorporating it into my diet but have definitely slacked recently. Can't get enough of orange juice at the moment! Thanks for all your advice
