Well i won a holiday with work so im being sent to Portugal on Monday all paid for with luxery boat trips ect so cant wait. Theres a fairly big group of us going and im the only one pregnant, fortunately my manager is going who is a very good friend and i know she will support me if i choose not to take part in a certain activity.

What id like to know is what should i be doing differently on holiday? its going to be very hot and i am fair with red hair im thinking high factor sun cream and hat?
maybe factor 30? or even higher?

i have a fairly big bump now and look a lot further on than i actually am do i need to have my bump covered from the sun or will i be ok strutting round in my bikini?
I like to swim a lot this wont cause problems will it?

and can you think of anything else i might have overlooked?
i know to walk around a lot on the plane.
Thanks all :)

Wow! Lucky you winning a holiday!

I'd say that wearing a high factor would be a good idea. I don't see why you couldn't wear a bikini as long as you put sunscreen on your bump too. I'm not sure how hot it is in Portugal at the moment but remember that you shouldn't overheat so drink plenty of water and stay in the shade if you're getting very hot.

Obviously watch out for any dodgy foods and be careful of your cheeses. With the language barrier it might be harder in restaurants etc so just stick with safe options if you're unsure.

Hope you have a fantastic time!! x

Ooh I'm jealous. I went to Turkey when I was pregnant with my daughter, I was 13 weeks at the time. I'm fair like you so I made sure I was always covered in a really high factor, perhaps go even higher than 30 just to be safe as you know what it's like when the sun is really strong. While in Turkey I drank loads and loads of water and juice, I also cooled myself down with ice lollies, I did go swimming in the sea which was really refreshing, but I never swam for too long as the water attracts the sun, so you can get more burnt in the water. I was also really careful with what I ate, I did end up with diarrhoea, but I think it was just down to the food being quite different from home, even though I was careful.

Hope you have a great time. :D

The other ladies have given great advice, I just wanted to say have a great time!! Show us lots of pics when you get back... :D

Hi Keelie_b

I´m currently on holiday in lanzarote.... i´m only about 7 weeks pregnant and I am probably being over cautious about stuff but I guess over cautious is better than being under cautious. We bought several books and I bought one with me here, since this is my first pregnancy and everything is new to me. Its also good for quick reference about foods etc. I´ve been told to be wary of buffets, and since our hotel is buffet every night, you can imagine that i´m struggling a wee bit, especially when you dont know whats in everything! Also drink bottled water...lots of it....our rep told us the water here was not safe..so i´m drinking and brushing teeth with water etc......Also it meant no swimming in the ocean for me too. As you can tell i´m staying out the heat at the moment!! My boyfriend is being very supportive as well and not drinking too much either!
Just try to have a good time and relax as well.... :cheer: :cheer:

TBH fair with red hair I'd be using way more than factor 30 alwaya anyways. Maybe its because I'm married to a red head with very fair skin who hails from Australia so knows all about the damage the sun can do to fair skin (and also non fair - Australia is very skin cancer aware in more recent years and has big campaigns to cover up).

Swimming is good.

Stay out of the sun between 11am-3pm

Stay well hydrated.

Enjoy :)

Thanks guys.
I will take all your advice on board and will be very careful.
Just realised when i get back il be in 2nd tri woohoo!!!!

Make sure you use plenty of sun cream, swimming is fine as its suposed to be really good excercise whilst pregnant, drink plenty of water and walk around on the plane.
Have a fab time

hi keelie! I too am going to portugal on monday! going to albufeira- cant wait! I booked it last minute as I figured it may be a long time till I get another holiday! I'll be 15 weeks by then and my bump is starting to get noticable. I had to go out and buy loads of floaty dresses as trousers and skirts round my waist are really uncomfortable, esp if going out for evening meals. I'll still sunbathe in a bikini but as p.p. have said, I'll use a really high factor on my belly as its supposed to be in the high 20's next week! Yeehaa!!!

You have a great time as well then Alison!

If i see any other pregnant women at all whist im there il give them a wave  just in case it might be you :rotfl:

Oh you lucky thing, can I join you? All the ladies have given great advice, only other thing I would recommend is not to use spas/jacuzzis/hot tubs if you have the option as it can raise your body temperature too much, which isn't particularly good for LO during first tri. If you do use it, make sure to limit yourself to no more than 10 mins! I went on hols during my first tri and used a jacuzzi a couple of times, but only for very short periods.

Have a fab time!
