Pretty much the title really...

Jack is 5 days old and has this thing going where he will latch on unlatch himself root around and latch on again what feels like 50 times before he will settle. Sometimes getting really upset if he can't find nipple again fast enough. I don't understand why he won't stay on once latched. It was just the right side for a day or so but now its both and its not fun when I'm trying to get him fed quickly to deal with my 18 month old.

Any ideas?

My son used to do this, but not Lucy this time around. I think my let-down was slower after him arriving as I was induced...my milk took an extra day to come in, took longer to get up to speed etc.
He seemed to do it until my milk was really coming to him...leaving me very sticky while he decided it was time to stay on and feed and not just leave milk dripping out all over the place!
I found it helped if I squeezed some milk onto the tip of my nipple before he started feeding so he smelt/tasted it and didn't feel like he had to make such a song and dance of it. It didn't completely solve things, but it took it down to a 30-60 second mess-about instead of several minutes!
It all settled down at 2 or 3 weeks old anyway as my milk was up to demand and he could make eye-contact better and smiled and almost knew to wait a bit.
Good luck xx

Aela used to do this sometimes and Arran is the same. I thought it might be to do with boosting milk supply and growth spurts. There are other times when they feed/fed perfectly! Xx

It can be frustrating and Im not looking forward to my 18month old being demanding when the baby needs fed. But I think its just a waiting game and being patient until he gets a bit more established. My 3rd didnt properly start BFding until 3 weeks then it was all plain sailing but up until then I was trying to BF and expressing. Good luck and I hope it settles down into a good routine soon for you :) x
