Oh and I both speak english, I can get by ok in french but am a little rusty know so my reading is better than speaking, OH is practically fluent in german (I say practically as he sometimes mixes up high german with swiss german which his family speaks) both of us sign (british sign language) as we learnt it at uni - OH can do the basic and I did the itermediate qualification....

Poor baby smile get spoken to in english and german, gets signed at all the time and we are trying to persuade my FIL to speak to him in urdu too!

oh and we can both read the arabic script but struggle with understanding it so we are learnin that too!

Squiglet thats great that you can communicate with ur family using the sign language i also have an aunt with downs but she can communicate well but ive noticed from she has got older her speech is a bit slurred and she doesnt like it when u ask her to repeat what she has just said, yip Makaton is more help with talking i really enjoyed using it, id love to do a course in BSL but havent got around to it.

Smile thats great that u sign also and its good to teach your children another couple of languages 2, when we have children they will b taught english and dutch and then probably learn german or another language at school.

Babsi, good luck with doing more with ur Spanish.

HappyAlice BSL- im taken that as basic sign language please corrrect me if im wrong but if im right thats great i have also a little sign language its called makaton (sp) i learned it as i worked with disable people that used it.

No its British Sign Language BSL....Makatons different although deaf children start with Makaton before moving to BSL... I used it with my brother and sister (who both have Downs) and my daughter who had hearing loss and Speech problems. Makaton is more of an aid to talking rather than a replacement language :)

I've only done level 1 but plan to do level 2 in a couple of years after i've finished my current college course.
I found it easier than learning any other language - it's fun :)
