Okay, so I'm super late writing up this birth story, but I'm sure when (if!) you read it all will become clear.

So, I was due on 20th May and had a sweep on the 22nd - which didn't do anything! I had an induction date for Wednesday 30th May at 9.30am - me and hubby got hardly any sleep the night before in excitement!

Arrived at the hospital to be told we would just be monitored today as there were not enough beds for induction and I was only (!) 10 days overdue. All obs were fine for me and baby, so they rebooked an induction for 8pm on Saturday 2nd June.

So, Saturday arrived, and we faffed around all day to pass the time. At 5.30pm, my mum and dad came round to see us before we went and to tell us to keep them informed.

Arrived at the hospital at 7.40pm to be told there was a massive backlog and there was no beds avaliable yet. But, since I was almost 2 weeks overdue, I wasn't to be sent home, instead, I sat downstairs in the hospital reception foyer with my hubby until 9.50pm. No one had come to get us so we went to see if we had been forgotten - we had.

They settled me into a bed at 10.30pm and started monitioring me and baby before they could give me the first tablet. At just after midnight (Sunday 3rd June) the first tablet was inserted and I got some sleep. I woke up at 4.00am when the midwife came in to look at my charts. I was apparently having very mild contractions, but couldn't feel a thing!

At 6.20am, I was only 1cm dialated and my cervix was still high and closed, so the second and last tablet was inserted. At 8.50am, the midwife saw I was having stronger contractions, so moved us to our room to settle us in.

At 9.30am, the contractions were really strong, so I started on gas and air - this did absolutely nothing for me, but I kept taking it in the hope that it would start lol!!

My newly assigned midwife, Chris, came to check me over. STILL 1cm dialated with my cervix high and closed :-( She called for the consultant registrar to put a catheter in me as she couldn't and he took 3 attempts to do it - I have a triangle of scars from this still today! He then examined me and said he would try to break my waters to help labour along. However, when he tried it was the worst pain I have ever felt, EVER! He had to stop as I physically couldn't stand that pain at all - and I've dealt with a broken shoulder!

I then had to have an epidural put in as the only other way they could try to break my waters was too painful to do without this form of pain relief. At 11.30am, my epidural was fitted and I couldn't feel any contractions at all. Baby was fine throughout. The consultant came back and tried to break my waters, but couldn't.

This left me with two options. One, go home and leave it 48 hours for the baby to have some time, then start the induction process all over again, or to have an emergency c-section. I was advised against option one so consented to a c-section.

At 5.30pm, I was all prepped and moved into the theatre and hubby (who had disappeared) went to get scrubbed up. My epidural was topped up to the max to numb me for the procedure and then I was sliced open.

Baby James was born at 18:07 weighing 7lb 11 :-) and he was perfect :-)

Now, I'd like to say this is where my story ended after the horrificness that was my (non) labour, but it's not. I had a massive blood loss after James was taken out from me, which needed cleaning up, then they stitched me quite quickly to avoid more. This left my iron levels reallllllly low, which has delayed the healing process and affected my milk production too.

I ended up with an infection of my wound, as there was a lip of skin from stitching me so quickly.

Also, as I was breast feeding James, no one realised how bad the iron had affected the production, so at his 5 day weighing, he had lost too much birth weight, so we were admitted to hospital for 48 long hours to build it up again by topping him up with formula after each feed.

He is now a healthy 11lb 14 and being combination fed :-)

So, finally (if you managed to stay with this essay!) we are both doing well. He is perfect and nothing wrong whatsoever, I am still waiting for my all clear and can't use my pram yet :-( Hopefully won't be long!

I love him so much and would honestly do it all over again if I had to :-)

xxxxxxxx
