As some of you may know, O was finally born last night. I'm breastfeeding. Last night he was on the breast for an hour after birth then it's been 15 minutes intermittently throughout the night. Today he's feeding for 15-20 minutes every 1.5 - 2 hours. Then I'll get an hour where he's on the boob for 10, off for 10, looking for boob again for 10. Is this all normal new baby stuff?

Yep! Cluster feeding to up your supply. Is he getting wet nappies (perhaps not dirty yet, not sure how it's supposed to work as C couldn't wait til she got out of my tummy to poop lol) and mws are happy with latch? If so no reason to worry I remember C was on every 30 mins for days! Xx

^^WSS hun, LO is establishing supply think of it as LO putting their milk order in. It will ease up hub but the first six weeks are the toughest. I would sit on a comfy chair, get some cushions for support and feed, feed, feed. have a good load of snacks and maybe a box set or two.

Massive congratulations, we are all here to help xx

When will the express machine work? When my milk comes in?

He's had 3 dirty nappies today!! lol

The advice is not to pump for six weeks until your supply regulates. I had to express from early on with C and I have not had any major issues with supply apart from slight over silly in my right breast but I think that's more because C favours this side xx

I'm considering expressing early because its quite painful. Im persevering for now hoping it will change. Apparently the latch is correct, his sucking is perfect but I'm feeling like little pins & needles pains in whatever nipple he's feeding off. I don't know if they're just "toughening" up but ouch!

My MW told me that its a lie that it shouldnt hurt, it will hurt until you get used to bf xx

& if he's eagerly sucking, a very keen/content suck is he definitely getting something into him?? I'm heart scared of him starving. Silly, I know.

I would of thought so hun. If they make alot of noise this can sometimes mean latch is abit off, but if hes really keen id think hes getting some. X

Community midwife just called out. She watched me feeding O & said we're both perfect. Relief. She advised trying to feed him more often during the day (even if content) so that he might go longer at night. Its worth a go. Spoke to her about my nipples being pins & needles & she said its just part & parcel of it for some. She said the most important thing was that they weren't cracked. I said that I had been applying Lansinoh buy didn't really like the texture, plus O seems to know when it's on. She said she just recommends olive oil to keep them in good condition.

Erratic feeding is normal hun. I have had days where my little man has latched on and not let go for almost the entire day (probably a growth spurt). Expect it at night as well i am afraid. Just sleep whenever and how ever you can as its the lack of sleep that will do you in.

My midwife told ne that if baby wasn't getting any milk then they wouldn't put in the effort so if your little one is sucking away content then chances are they are getting their boobie milk. Remember they only need a teaspoon of milk in the early days.

Your nips will hurt i still have sore days now its worse when they first latch on but should start to ease after a while.

Vickyxx - that's exactly right. It's horrible when he first latches on. I just want to pull him off, but then it eases & while I can still feel it I can also ignore it.

Also air your nips when you can. Sounds silly but the air helps them heal quicker xx

Today (so far) O fed 8.45-9.00, 10.35-10.50, 12.30-12.55, 2.45-3.05, 4.35-4.55. He's having wet & dirty nappies but it feels like he doesn't feed for very long. I know he'll still feed again a few times before bed but this breast feeding lark has me ruined. I'd probably be stressing about something else if I was formula feeding but I didn't think breast feeding would have me fretting so much.

He has a very small tummy hun, so can only take little and often.

Breast milk digests easier so tht means they feed more often too.

Its all totally normal, you are doing brilliantly xx

You are doing brilliantly Hun and that all sounds normal to me. Watch the baby and not the clock hub long suckling and swallowing to start off with followed by fluttery suckling and swallowing. as long as you are getting wet and dirty nappies and LO is gaining weight there is no cause for concern.

You will find that the weight gain starts to be a reward in the early days for great mummy milk. Now C is seven and a half months old I hardly get him weighed

Xx
